- Three of Southampton's last five wins have been by two or more goals
- Sheffield Wednesday have conceded 40 league goals this season
- Recommended Bet: Southampton -1 goal on handicap

It looked as though it could be a testing first season back in the Championship for Southampton when they lost four matches on the spin back in September.

However, they have not tasted defeat in any competition since losing 2-1 to Middlesbrough that month and Saints have emerged as serious promotion contenders in the second division.

They started 2024 with a frustrating 1-1 draw away to Norwich but they thrashed Walsall 4-0 on home soil last Saturday in the FA Cup and are expected to prevail upon their return to St Mary's against the Owls on Saturday.

Team news

Ross Stewart is sidelined for the rest of the campaign for Southampton, while Kamaldeen Sulemana and Samuel Edozie are out and Joe Aribo is at the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.

For Wednesday, Callum Paterson, Will Vaulks and Dominic Iorfa are injured, while George Byers is suspended.

The stats

Southampton are on a 19-game unbeaten run in all competitions, winning 13 of those matches.

They have won five of their last six assignments, winning by at least two goals in three of those contests, all of which were at home.

Wednesday have sustained 16 defeats in the Championship this season, the most in the division.

They have also conceded 40 times, meaning they are conceding an average of 1.54 goals per game.

As Ipswich stutter in their pursuit of automatic promotion from the Championship, Southampton are looking to capitalise, having moved to just three points off the Tractor Boys in the standings.

Russell Martin's men are in such a strong position thanks to a stellar 19-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

And in December, in particular, they turned on the style with 4-0 and 5-0 home wins over Blackburn and Swansea.

Wednesday, who are under threat of relegation from the second tier, could be the latest team to feel the wrath of the prolific Saints attack.

More recently, things have looked up for the Owls, who beat Preston and Hull City either side of the new year, but Southampton represent a step-up in quality.

Wednesday have still lost 16 league fixtures this season, leaking 40 goals in the process, and this should be a pretty routine for the hosts, who can come out on top by two or more goals.
