Record-breaker Rohit in top gear ahead of Pakistan test
Rohit Sharma was at the peak of his powers as India swept aside Afghanistan in their second Cricket World Cup group match.
The host nation were set 273 to win in Dehli on Wednesday and triumphed by eight wickets, with their captain hitting a magnificent 131 after bringing up his century in just 63 balls.
It is the fastest World Cup hundred by an Indian batter and the sensational knock from Sharma saw many other records tumble.
Ahead of Saturday's match against Pakistan in Ahmedabad, we shine the spotlight on a great of the white-ball game — who recently became just the 15th player to surpass 10,000 ODI runs.
What records did Rohit break vs Afghanistan?
Sharma's match-winning contribution included five sixes, a masterclass in boundary hitting which saw him surpass West Indies legend Chris Gayle as the cricketer with the most maximums across all international formats (Test, ODI and T20).
The 36-year-old now has a whopping 556 of them on his CV, reaching the landmark in 30 fewer innings than Gayle.
Elsewhere, Sharma's dismantling of Afghanistan's bowling attack saw him overtake Sachin Tendulkar as the player with the most World Cup centuries, bringing up his seventh in just 19 innings.
And a record three of those hundreds have come in successful World Cup chases, while the superstar affectionately nicknamed The Hitman also equalled David Warner in bringing up 1000 tournament runs in just 19 innings.
What other ODI records does Rohit hold?
At the World Cup in England four years ago, Sharma set the record for most centuries in a single edition by hitting five as he notched 648 runs at an average of 81.00.
Away from the ICC tournament stage, the India skipper has achieved more of the 50-over format's most impressive feats.
Sharma recorded the highest individual score to date in November 2014 when he hit 264 off 173 deliveries in a 153-run victory over Sri Lanka.
It was the second of his three double centuries in the format — and he is the only batter in history to surpass 200 on more than one occasion.
What is Rohit's record vs Pakistan?
Sharma's ODI record against Saturday's opponent Pakistan is very impressive.
In 18 innings, the Nagpur native has hit 787 runs at an average of 49.18, with his top score of 140 coming in India's 2019 World Cup group stage victory.
Ahead of the latest encounter between the two biggest cricketing nations, Sharma said: "For us it is crucial that we don't worry about external factors and just look at things we can control.
"We just need to show up and do well. Things like what the pitch is like and what combo we can play are what we can control.
"What happens outside, we won't be worried about it. It is just about focusing on what we can do as players and how we can perform.
"We have got guys who can play fearless cricket with bat and guys who can absorb like the last game [against Australia]. It is about absorbing pressure and making the right decision on the field."
