The Olympics Men's football tournament gets underway in France on Wednesday with eight fixtures on the schedule.

The two first fixtures - Argentina vs Morocco and Uzbekistan vs Spain - include three of the four outright favourites, while hosts and market leaders France are in action against the United States later the same day.

Argentina vs Morocco (Wednesday, 2pm)

The stats

Argentina Under-23s manager Javier Mascherano has named four World Cup winners in his squad, while Morocco under-23s have lost three of their last five games.

Prediction

Argentina last won Olympic gold when Lionel Messi was in the squad and another man who was a part of that squad, Mascherano, has named a squad more than capable of going all the way once again.

Julian Alvarez is probably the standout player in a team that includes four World Cup winners and they can get off to a winning start against fourth-favourites Morocco.

The underdogs have their own star in Achraf Hakimi, but their Under-23s side have lost three of their last five games and will be up against it in Saint-Etienne on Wednesday.

Uzbekistan vs Spain (Wednesday, 2pm)

The stats

Spain won the silver medal in the 2020 Olympics, while Uzbekistan have only won one of their last four matches.

Prediction

Spain took home the silver medal in the 2020 Olympics and they are among the favourites to repeat the success of the senior team when they head to Paris.

The likes of Fermin Lopez and Alex Baena were part of that Euro 2024 winning squad, while Samu Omorodion has attracted the interest of Chelsea and defender Pau Cubarsi has already represented Spain three times at the age of 17.

This is Uzbekistan’s first Olympic games in football, but they have only won one of their last four games and their best player is attacker Eldor Shomurodov, who scored just three goals in 24 appearances on loan at Cagliari last season.

Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette captains a very strong-looking France side.

France vs United States (Wednesday, 8pm)

The stats

France have scored 12 goals in their three warm-up friendlies, while United States have only won one of their last five matches.

Prediction

Host nation France have named a star-studded squad as they look to bring home gold in front of their own fans, with Alexandre Lacazette captaining the squad and the likes of Michael Olise, Rayan Cherki, and Jean-Philippe Mateta also included.

This incredibly strong attacking line-up has seen Thierry Henry’s side score 12 times across three warm-up friendlies and they face a United States side a level below them in terms of squad quality.

The underdogs are playing in their first Olympics since Beijing 2008 and lost 2-0 to Japan in their last match in June.
