Mary Earps has been named the 2023 Sports Personality of the Year for her achievements with England and Manchester United.

The Lionesses stopper follows in the footsteps of last year's winner and international team-mate Beth Mead.

Earps, 30, became the third consecutive woman to win the BBC award after Emma Raducanu's triumph in 2021.

She said: "First of all I would like to say how humbled I am to be on a list of such incredible athletes.

"For me, I feel like this is the ultimate all-round sporting accolade and I think us as Lionesses and United as well we have had an incredible couple of years.

"It has not been the easiest journey and I definitely wouldn't be where I am without the number of incredible people in my corner so I just want to say thank you to them.

"I am so glad that I can bring some of my loved ones with me today who have been with me through the really really not so great times.

"The last two years have been absolutely unbelievable. I have done more than I could ever have imagined and for that I am truly incredibly grateful."

For the 70th edition of the event, the Euro 2022 winner fended off runs from cricketer Stuart Broad, who was the runner-up, and athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Jockey Frankie Dettori, wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewitt and golfer Rory McIlroy were also nominated for the prize.

Earps' popularity has been boosted over the last 12 months thanks to England's journey to the World Cup final in Australia, keeping three clean sheets along the way.

Her fierce personality has also hit the headlines and she successfully campaigned for her shirts to be sold during the tournament Down Under.

Alongside her most recent award, the England No1 has also been named FIFA Best Women's Goalkeeper and England Women's Player of the Year in 2023.

Earps kept 14 clean sheets for United during the 2022-23 campaign, earning the Women's Super League Golden Glove.
