Manchester City midfielder Jill Roord has ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament.

The Dutch star suffered the injury in the ninth minute of City's 2-1 Conti Cup victory over Manchester United on Wednesday.

Rood, 26, became the Citizens' record signing when she joined from Wolfsburg for a reported £300,000 last summer.

She had made a blistering start at her new club, scoring eight goals, providing three assists and playing in all 11 of City's Women's Super League games this term.

A statement from City said: "We can confirm that Jill Roord has suffered a rupture to her anterior cruciate ligament.

"Jill will remain under the care of City's medical team and will begin her rehabilitation.

"Everyone at City wishes her a full and speedy recovery."

The 98-cap international is the latest in a concerning trend of ACL injuries in women's football with Chelsea star Sam Kerr suffering the same fate earlier this month.

Gunners trio Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema have also recently returned from ACL injuries.

Gareth Taylor's side currently sit second in the WSL, three points leaders and defending champions Chelsea.

They travel to face sixth-place Tottenham in the WSL at Brisbane Road tomorrow.
