Blues down but not out

Joe Cole believes Chelsea can still turn their Champions League quarter-final tie with Real Madrid around despite a damaging 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge last night.

Hat-trick hero Karim Benzema netted two terrific first-half headers before pouncing on some dreadful defending early in the second period to put Los Blancos firmly in command.

But Kai Havertz’s goal means Thomas Tuchel’s men only trail by two heading to the Spanish capital — a situation which former Blues winger Cole thinks is salvageable.

The three-time Premier League winner said: "Chelsea need to take the second half into the Bernabeu and start with that intensity. This tie is not over.

"The first 20 minutes in Madrid will be crucial and the next goal will be massive."

With the away goals rule abolished, a 2-0 Chelsea victory in next week’s second leg would force the tie into extra-time.

Whoever progresses will face one of Manchester City or Atletico Madrid in the final four, with the Citizens winning Tuesday’s first leg 1-0 at the Etihad.

Muller: Bayern happy to regroup

Thomas Muller admitted Bayern Munich were pleased to escape from Villarreal with a 1-0 defeat following a tough night for the German champions at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Unai Emery’s hosts lead the Champions League quarter-final tie thanks to Arnaut Danjuma’s early goal and now have a real chance of causing a seismic upset.

However, they were left to rue a string of missed chances late on which could have strengthened their position even further ahead of next Tuesday’s trip to the Allianz Arena.

Experienced campaigner Muller, 32, believes the Bundesliga giants got away with a lucky result.

He said: "We’ll take the 1-0. We know that things could have been a lot worse.

"We have to pay a lot of respect to our opponents. Now we need to pick ourselves back up for the return leg and hit back."

Julian Nagelsmann’s side will hope for a similar outcome to their last-16 encounter with FC Salzburg, where a disappointing 1-1 draw in Austria was followed up with a 7-1 rout in Bavaria.

Sergio gets his statue

Manchester City will mark the 10-year anniversary of Sergio Aguero’s iconic title-winning goal by unveiling a statue of the Argentine forward.

Aguero’s injury-time strike in a 3-2 win over QPR in 2012 saw the Citizens land a first Premier League trophy in the most dramatic of circumstances, pipping bitter rivals Manchester United to top spot on goal difference.

Now, the memorable moment will be further etched into club folklore thanks to the new sculpture, set to be revealed during a busy day of anniversary celebrations on Friday, May 13.

Still the club’s all-time record scorer with 260 goals during his decade-long stay at the Etihad, 33-year-old Aguero left City for Barcelona last summer but was forced to retire early on medical grounds in December.

Aguero is expected to be in attendance at the unveiling, alongside several other members of the 2011-12 title-winning squad and 2,000 lucky supporters.

A City statement read: "As part of the club’s 93:20 celebrations, Sergio Aguero’s legacy will be honoured through the unveiling of a statue designed and created by renowned sculptor, Andy Scott.

"Aguero’s statue will join the statues of Vincent Kompany and David Silva completing a trinity to commemorate a defining era for the club."

Cryptocurrency group agree Crawley takeover

A group of cryptocurrency investors have successfully completed a takeover of English League Two club Crawley.

WAGMI United LLC, led by American co-founders Preston Johnson and Eben Smith, inherit the Sussex-based outfit from Turkish steel magnate Ziya Eren who has opted to cut ties with the club entirely.

The controversial group failed in an attempt to purchase Bradford City last December after concerns were raised regarding their proposed business model.

In a statement released today, Johnson said: “Crawley is a club with more than 125 years of rich history that we revere and respect.

"However, a conventional approach to ownership hasn't worked and the club is losing hundreds of thousands of pounds while its fans suffer through year after year of uninspiring results on the pitch.

"We're going to shake up the status quo, try out some new ideas and build a worldwide community of fans new and old that can be excited to cheer on the Red Devils together — stretching from West Sussex to anywhere in the world with an internet connection."

Current Crawley manager John Yems said: "This is an exciting time for the club. Let's hope that we can continue the good progress we have made and take the club forward."
