Key talking points from Champions League MD6
The final matchday of this year's Champions League group stage once again produced mixed results for English clubs.
Manchester City made it six wins from six, while Arsenal earned a 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven after securing top spot in their previous outing.
But Manchester United and Newcastle's defeats saw both sides eliminated from European competition altogether.
We take a look at all the key talking points.
Theatre of Screams
United's Champions League campaign ended with a whimper as they were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.
A second-half strike from Kingsley Coman extended the Bundesliga champions' unbeaten run in European group matches to 40.
The Red Devils' loss saw them finish bottom of the pile behind Copenhagen and Galatasaray, meaning they will not even be playing Europa League football in the new year.
Erik ten Hag's side were met with more boos at full-time and the pressure continues to build on the Dutchman ahead of Sunday's trip to Liverpool.
Adventure over
Newcastle lost 2-1 to AC Milan after taking the lead through Joelinton as Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze silenced St James' Park after the break.
Mike Maignan denied Bruno Guimaraes with a brilliant save onto the crossbar when the scores were locked at 1-1 in the second half — a moment which ultimately proved to be pivotal.
Had the Magpies maintained their advantage, they would have progressed to the knockout rounds after Paris Saint-Germain were held to a 1-1 draw by group winners Borussia Dortmund.
Instead, Newcastle's upcoming fixture list does not feature any European adventures, while Milan will play in the Europa League.
Perfect City
City joined Real Madrid in the maximum points club after beating Crvena Zvezda 3-2 in Belgrade.
Pep Guardiola heavily rotated his XI and two of the Citizens' rising stars repaid the manager's faith.
Micah Hamilton, 20, netted the game's opener on his competitive senior debut before Oscar Bobb made it 2-0 in the 66th minute.
The hosts got one back through Hwang In-beom but Kalvin Phillips' strike from the penalty spot — his first goal in City colours — made sure Aleksandar Katai's stoppage-time effort was merely a consolation.
Gunning for glory
Like their Premier League title rivals, Arsenal deployed a much-changed team at PSV with top spot secured.
Eddie Nketiah made the most of a rare opportunity to start by firing home an excellent goal after being teed up by fellow Hale End graduate Reiss Nelson.
But PSV finally made their dominance count early in the second half with Yorbe Vertessen netting a splendid strike of his own.
Neither side managed to bag a late winner, although Leandro Trossard was denied from close range by Walter Benitez with virtually the last kick of the game.
