Ipswich or draw double chance

The first Saturday lunchtime kick-off of the Premier League season pits new boys Ipswich against a Liverpool team entering a new era.

Ipswich gained automatic promotion from the Championship in second spot last season but have been handed a baptism of fire in the top flight, facing the Reds and then Manchester City in their first two matches.

But it remains to be seen how Liverpool will perform this season after Jurgen Klopp left the club earlier this year with former Feyenoord boss Arne Slot replacing him.

Team news

Nathan Broadhead, Harry Clarke and George Hirst are injured and set to miss Ipswich's opener, while there could be debuts for Liam Delap and goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

Arne Slot has a clean bill of health for his opening match as Liverpool manager.

The stats

Ipswich excelled at Portman Road last season, winning 16 of their 23 games and losing just one home fixture in the Championship.

Liverpool, meanwhile, won only eight of their 19 away fixtures in the top flight last season.

Goals could also be on the cards in this one with both teams having scored in 26 of Liverpool's 38 Premier League assignments in the 2023-24 season.

Prediction

Slot looks like a smart appointment from Liverpool and the fact they have not signed anyone this summer is by no means a disaster.

But it usually takes time to adjust to a new head coach and Liverpool fans should not expect an easy time of it at Portman Road on Saturday.

This will be Ipswich's first Premier League match in 22 years and the fans are expected to generate a tricky atmosphere for the visitors.

Ipswich have kept together the same core of players that got them promoted last term, retaining star loanee Omari Hutchinson on a permanent basis.

And that means they are able to hit the ground running.

Results in pre-season games do not mean a lot but their 1-0 wins over Nice and Hoffenheim should provide them with reassurance.

And last season Ipswich were a tough nut to crack on their own patch, having collected more points (54) at home than any other Championship club.

With that in mind, there is every chance the Tractor Boys can start the season by avoiding defeat in East Anglia.
