Inter to win

Recent away defeats at Bournemouth and Newcastle have seen Arsenal slip in their chase for the Premier League title and they may not gain much respite when they head to Italy to face Inter in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Serie A champions have tasted defeat just once this season and present a tough assignment as the Gunners look to maintain their unbeaten start to the league phase.

Team news

Alessandro Bastoni could feature for Inter despite limping out of Sunday’s 1-0 win at Venezia but Carlos Augusto is set to miss out with a hamstring injury.

The game could come too early for Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard, while Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kieran Tierney and Riccardo Calafiori are all ruled out.

The stats

Arsenal have won just one of their last five away matches in all competitions.

Both teams have scored in just two of Arsenal’s last 17 games on the road.

Inter have kept clean sheets in five of their last seven games.

The Gunners scored more than once in just one of their five Champions League games last season.

Neither of these teams have conceded in their three matches in this season’s competition.

Prediction

Arsenal have slipped seven points behind leaders Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title and their recent performances on the road suggest they could be up against it when they take on Inter.

The Gunners were unfortunate to be stung by a late goal in a 2-2 draw against Manchester City, but their recent showings at Bournemouth and Newcastle have been poor, which makes them vulnerable against the Serie A champions.

Arsenal did earn a draw at Atalanta on their previous visit to Italy when David Raya saved a penalty to keep the game goalless and they have yet to concede in three games in the Champions League.

However, the same can be said of their opponents, who earned a goalless draw at Manchester City and they look set to come out on top of this one, particularly if striker Lautaro Martinez maintains his good recent form after six goals in his last nine appearances.

A 3-0 success over Championship outfit Preston in the Carabao Cup has been the only success Arsenal have enjoyed in their last five away games and they were unable to muster many opportunities on their trip to St James’ Park on Saturday, so it would not be a surprise if the Serie A champions come out on top in this one.
