Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League journey could have a big impact on the future of Kylian Mbappe.

The World Cup winner looked to be on his way out of the Parc des Princes over the summer, when he refused to commit to a new contract.

Yet the 24-year-old is now the most vital component of a new-look PSG side, with talks reportedly being held over an extension to his deal.

Ahead of the Ligue 1 giants' trip to Newcastle in the Champions League tonight, we take a look at Mbappe's future and the chances of him remaining in Paris.

Presidential speech

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has recently stated that he expects Mbappe to still be at the club next season.

He said: "Kylian Mbappe is a PSG player. He loves the club. He's a fantastic player. He's the best in the world.

"We are very happy to have him and we will have him."

These are bold words considering Mbappe's contract will expire next summer.

PSG tried to cash in on the France international as recently as July, when they reportedly accepted a £257million bid from Al-Hilal.

Mbappe refused to even meet with the Saudi Arabian side, insisting that he simply wanted to see out his contract.

Yet there now seems to have been a softening in the respective stances of both player and club, with reports claiming that there have been talks regarding a contract extension.

French influx

Key to persuading Mbappe to stay is for PSG to both match his on-field ambitions and to keep him happy off it.

The Ligue 1 champions have a new-look team this season, after big names such as Lionel Messi, Neymar, Julian Draxler, Marco Verratti and Sergio Ramos all departed over the summer.

Among the fresh talents brought in are a number of French players, such as Lucas Hernandez, Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Randal Kolo Muani.

A curious aspect of the PSG project since Qatar Sports Investments became involved is the tendency to concentrate on signings from abroad, when there is so much talent within France.

The major exception to that rule of course has been Mbappe himself. It remains to be seen as to whether this influx of compatriots will help keep the forward at the club.

This French contingent at PSG now even includes his 16-year-old brother Ethan Mbappe, a midfielder who has already been selected on the bench this season.

The charm offensive may have come too late, though Champions League success could sway Mbappe's mind.

Flying Magpies

The Champions League is the missing piece for PSG, with Mbappe part of the team that came closest when they lost the final to Bayern Munich in 2020.

Now they try again and though they got off to a good start with a 2-0 win in their opening group game against Borussia Dortmund, their domestic form under Luis Enrique is a concern.

PSG have only won three of their seven league outings, drawing 0-0 at Clermont on Saturday, in a game that saw Mbappe return from an injury that threatened his involvement against Newcastle.

The Magpies are on a similar journey to the French giants and now get to welcome the sort of superstar to St James' Park that they one day aspire to sign themselves.

Should PSG fail to deliver in Europe, then Mbappe may be available in the near future.
