Hull vs Sheffield Wednesday predictions: Tigers can put tough start behind them
- Hull lost only one of their final 12 home league games last term
- Wednesday lost 16 of their 23 away matches when last in the second tier
- Recommended bet: Hull to win
Both Hull and Sheffield Wednesday suffered 2-1 defeats on the opening weekend of the Championship season, so they will be eager to bounce back in this Yorkshire derby on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers were undone by an injury-time goal from Norwich’s Adam Idah at Carrow Road while Wednesday were beaten in similar circumstances by Southampton, who pounced late to snatch all three points.
Hull suffered another 2-1 loss against League Two opponents Doncaster in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, a result which left manager Liam Rosenior demanding a positive response against the Owls.
Wednesday, meanwhile, came through their first-round cup clash against fourth-tier Stockport on penalties after Tyreeq Bakinson had equalised for the Owls in the seventh-minute of stoppage time.
Team news
Wednesday gave a number of senior players the night off in Tuesday’s EFL Cup triumph.
Defenders Akin Famewo and Michael Ihiekwe were among those rested and they look set to be restored to the Owls' backline on Saturday.
Michael Smith missed out through illness but should return and Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz has confirmed that Bambo Diaby, DiShon Bernard, Liam Palmer and George Byers are also fit to feature against Hull.
Marvin Johnson is yet to play this season and is again doubtful. Former Hull player Mallik Wilks and Ciaran Brennan are confirmed absentees.
Hosts Hull are without Scottish midfielder Greg Docherty but American striker Vaughn Covil played 62 minutes against Doncaster in midweek and is back in contention.
The stats
The most recent derby between these two was won by Hull, who emerged victorious at Hillsborough in January 2020. Jarrod Bowen, now in the Premier League with West Ham, grabbed the only goal of the game.
That means the Tigers have lost only one of the last nine meetings between the pair, winning each of the last three encounters to nil.
Under 2.5 goal backers have been in clover in that time with seven of the last nine meetings between the pair producing no more than two goals.
There were also two or fewer goals in ten of Hull’s final 12 Championship home games last season. The Tigers lost only one of those outings — a 3-1 reverse to champions Burnley.
Wednesday were promoted from League One last season but they lost 16 of their 23 away assignments when they were last a Championship club during the 2020-21 season.
Prediction
Hull and Sheffield Wednesday have both endured tough starts to the new campaign and their desperation to get off the mark at the MKM Stadium may lead to a cagey contest.
But the Tigers made excellent progress under Rosenior last season and his arrival transformed their form, especially at home where they lost only one of their final 12 games.
The signings of Aaron Connolly from Brighton, Manchester City loanee Liam Delap and Ruben Vinagre of Sporting shows serious intent and it won’t be long until Hull find their groove.
They showed glimpses of what they are capable of in their 2-1 loss at Norwich last weekend and they should relish this easier test against Wednesday, who had only 20% possession in their 2-1 defeat at home to Southampton.
Rosenior will have his team fired up and they can snap their losing sequence against the Owls, who won only two of their final eight away games in League One last season.
