Webb insight

Ex-referee Howard Webb has admitted that Nathan Ake's goal for Manchester City against Fulham last Saturday should have been ruled offside.

Marco Silva was angry that the header, putting City 2-1 up just before half-time, had been allowed to stand, with Manuel Akanji appearing to distract goalkeeper Bernd Leno from an offside position.

And in a new TV show in which PGMOL chief Webb reflects on recent controversies, he has accepted that it should have been disallowed.

He said: "These are not always easy to call because you're trying to get two pieces of information together — is the player offside, and then the consequence of being in that position.

"From the outset I think this should have been disallowed. It certainly appears Akanji has an impact on Leno the goalkeeper who seems to hesitate.

"We think it's a clear situation of offside, unfortunately it wasn't identified on the day. This was an error."

Saka accolade

Bukayo Saka has been voted England men's Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Midfielder Jude Bellingham was second in the ballot while captain and all-time goalscorer Harry Kane was third.

Saka has scored seven goals in 10 Three Lions appearances in the last 12 months, including three strikes at the 2022 World Cup and a first career hat-trick against North Macedonia in June.

He is in Gareth Southgate's squad for the Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine on Saturday before the World Cup quarter-finalists face Scotland on Tuesday.

England surgery

Beth England has revealed that hip surgery will keep her out of the beginning of the Women's Super League season.

The Tottenham forward will also miss England's Nations League fixtures against Scotland and the Netherlands later this month.

She said on social media: "Unfortunately on Monday I required hip surgery to fix an issue I've had for a few months.

"Sadly this means I'll be sidelined for a while. Priority right now is my recovery and working hard to get back on the pitch as soon as possible."

Kasper on the move

Former Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has signed for Anderlecht on a one-year deal.

The stopper was available after leaving Nice by mutual consent last week and has swiftly penned terms with the Belgian club.

He said: "Anderlecht is just a massive club.

"Former team-mates from different places have always talked so highly and warmly of this place. It was something I really wanted to become part of."

The 36-year-old made 479 appearances in a legendary Foxes career, during which he won the Premier League and FA Cup, before playing 46 times for Nice last season.

Beth is back

Beth Mead has returned to training
Beth Mead has returned to training

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall says returning Beth Mead will provide a "lift" to the squad after returning from an ACL injury sustained last November.

Mead will form part of the travelling squad for Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against Linkoping but is unlikely to play.

Eidevall believes that her presence will be a boost, saying: "Mentally we hope this is a lift for the other injured players too, to see her coming back.

"It's so nice when you welcome a player back because you know how hard they have fought for so many months. That starts off the pitch and then on the pitch to be able to get into this shape."

Let's enjoy it

Bristol City striker Abi Harrison insists her side are not making up the numbers as they prepare for a return to the Women's Super League.

City are one of two sides in the division alongside Leicester without respective men's Premier League backing but Harrison says that they can still bloody the noses of the top sides.

She said: "First and foremost, I want to enjoy this.

"We’re not there to make up numbers. If people think we're a write-off from the start, that's on them.

"For us, the bare minimum is staying up. We can't control what other people are doing other than what we do in those 90 minutes and that's our goal, being true to who we are."

Brighton have signed Portugal international Tatiana Pinto from Levante.

Pinto has 100 caps for her country, including playing every minute of their campaign at the recent Women's World Cup.

Seagulls coach Melissa Phillips said: "She’s a talented and experienced player at both club an international level and she will add a dominant and creative flair to our attacking lines."
