Gotta have faith

Frank Lampard is calling on Everton fans to get behind the team after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Wolves.

The Toffees took the lead via Yerry Mina's strike but Daniel Podence struck back and Rayan Ait-Nouri popped up with a last-gasp winner.

Everton fans booed their sixth defeat in eight Premier League games, which leaves them just a point above 18th-placed Wolves, but Lampard called for patience.

He said: "I think the lads had all the right intentions so for that I’d love the crowd to stick with them.

"We saw what a positive Goodison Park can be last year so let’s not come away from that.

"I’m in the dressing room with them and I know they want to do the right thing.

"I’m not asking the players to play 100 passes in our own final third, but to be a bit braver on the ball.

"Good players want to play so I’d like that to get some backing as the reality is we haven’t got Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] for the direct option.

"We have to take it on the chin. We are trying to improve off the back of where we last year and it will be baby steps."

Norwich axe Smith

Dean Smith has been sacked by Norwich after 13 months in charge.

The Championship outfit lost 2-1 to Luton on Boxing Day to leave them 12 points off the top of the table in fifth.

A Canaries statement read: "We would like to place on record our thanks to Dean, Craig and Liam, who have always put the best interests of the football club first.

"With just under half of the season remaining and three consecutive home games on the horizon we now have a real opportunity to build some forward and positive momentum, both on and off the pitch."

Norwich face Reading on Friday as they look to close the gap on their promotion rivals.

Sporting director Stuart Webber added: "This was a tough decision, but one that we felt was necessary to give ourselves the best possible chance of achieving our objective of promotion to the Premier League this season."

Saints in with a  prayer

James Ward-Prowse knows Southampton face some huge fixtures in the coming weeks

Southampton playmaker James Ward-Prowse believes their festive schedule presents an opportunity to climb off the foot of the table.

New boss Nathan Jones suffered defeat in his home debut as Brighton ran out comfortable 3-1 winners on Boxing Day.

But skipper Ward-Prowse, who scored the Saints' goal, insists they can bounce back in upcoming games against Nottingham Forest and Fulham.

He said: "Of course we’re disappointed. [Our] first game after the restart and we saw it as a good opportunity to be on the front foot and give everybody something to be excited about.

"I think we failed to implement the manager’s messages and that’s disappointing.

"This time of year gives you the opportunity to turn bad results around very quickly and it’s a definitive period of the season for us.

"There’s a lot of winnable games coming up but that’s down to us and it starts on the training pitch with the work we’re going to do with the manager."

Dejan Kulusevski is desperate for Tottenham to break their habit of getting off to slow starts.

Spurs fought back from two goals behind to earn a point at Brentford on Boxing Day.

And Kulusevski is frustrated at his team's Jekyll and Hyde performances.

He said: "The first half was very bad, we didn’t feel ready, we lost every second ball and didn’t do anything with the ball. So we were very disappointed with the game. It’s not OK.

"You feel as a player as soon as we got the first goal we thought we were going to win. But the big problem is not the second half, it’s the first half.

"We have to improve. It’s not OK to start games like this. If we want to be a big team we have to start playing from the first minute.

"It’s not enough with words, we have to do it on the pitch. If I knew how to change it I would tell everybody but I don’t know. We have to figure it out as a team.

"We didn’t expect this and we work so hard to not play like this. When you work hard you want to see the results. But we have another game against Aston Villa soon and we will be prepared."
