Jimmy Anderson expects another tough battle with Virat Kohli when England’s Test series with India kicks off.

Two giants of the cricketing world meet again on Wednesday at the beginning of a blockbuster five-match series.

After getting the Indian skipper out four times in just 50 balls back in 2014, Anderson failed to pick up his wicket once in both the 2016 and 2018 series.

And England’s all-time greatest seamer has promised to work harder than ever to put that right.

Anderson, 39, told LiveScore: "I love playing against the best players in the world and he is clearly one of the best batsmen in the world.

"I did have success against him in 2014 but I’m not sure I have got him out at all since then. He’s definitely got the better of me.

"So I’ve got to do some work, do some hard yards this summer trying to get one back on him.

"The battles we have are exciting — I find it exciting to play against those sorts of players — so I can’t wait for it."

Revenge is on the card for Joe Root’s side following a 3-1 defeat in India earlier this year.

On home soil, England have a great chance to get one over the World Test Championship runners-up.

Anderson added: "I’m looking forward to it. It is always a good series against India.

"Obviously it was tough over in India — they are brilliant in their own conditions and they played really well.

"Whenever they come here it is always a close series. We have had some really good battles with them in the past. I’m sure this will be no different and everyone is really excited about it."

England enter the series with question marks over their batting line-up.

The likes of Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope have all struggled in recent Tests, leading to speculation about their places.

But Anderson, who will play his 163rd Test if selected at Trent Bridge on Wednesday, has told them to trust the skills that got them picked in the first place.

He said: "I think we’re fortunate that we have a few senior guys in the team who have been through that period of coming into the side and maybe not finding it easy.

"They have a little bit of success at the start and then go through a patch where maybe you don’t have the same sort of success.

"We’ve had the same experiences so I think it is important we pass that on and make sure they know it isn’t all plain sailing when you play international cricket.

"There will be tough times but they have been picked for a reason. They have been picked because they are the best in the country at the moment.

"So they are there on merit and it is just a case of making sure they are as comfortable as possible in their own skin when they go out and play on the international stage.

"It can be difficult but the guys who are successful will find a way of getting through difficult periods."

James Anderson is part of the team for the BBC's coverage of The Hundred, which can be followed across TV, radio and online. BBC TV and iPlayer will broadcast 18 games live throughout the tournament, including the men's and women's finals.
