Eddie Jones has stepped down as head coach of Australia just 10 months into a five-year contract.

The move follows a pool-stage exit at the 2023 Rugby World Cup — the first time in the tournament's history the Wallabies failed to reach the knockout stage.

Jones, 63, did not hide his dismay in leaving the position after a poor showing in France which included a humbling loss to Fiji.

He told The Australian: "I feel disappointment about the fact that what we wanted to do in terms of changing the system hasn't been able to happen in the short term.

"I have a major feeling of disappointment. But I don't feel any grievance towards anyone.

"I've really enjoyed coaching the players. The players have been fantastic. They just need a better environment to be training and playing in."

Jones was sacked by England one month before taking on the role as the Wallabies head coach last January — a deal that would have seen him in charge for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

However, the defeat to Fiji and a heavy loss to Wales brought their hopes of glory in 2023 to a disappointing end and with it Jones' tenure in charge of his country for a second time.

The Tasmanian lead Australia to a home World Cup final in 2003, only to lose to England in the Sydney showpiece.

Jones also led the Red Roses to the 2019 final, where they lost to South Africa, who defended their crown in Paris on Saturday night.

A Rugby Australia statement added: "Rugby Australia can confirm that it has accepted the resignation of Wallabies head coach Eddie Jones and he will depart the position on November 25.

"Rugby Australia thanks Eddie for his commitment to the Wallabies in 2023 and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

"Announcements regarding the future of the Wallabies coaching staff will be made in due course."

Jones has been heavily linked with a return to leading Japan, who he coached between 2012 and 2015.
