After beating Peru 1-0 in their second game, a draw against Chile could be enough for Canada to make the quarter-finals of the Copa America, while a win would guarantee their presence in the knockout rounds. 

Chile could only draw 0-0 with the Peruvians and then lost 1-0 to Argentina, so they need a victory to live up to expectations and make the last eight. 

Team news

Canada boss Jesse Marsch made a triple half-time substitution against Peru, with Derek Cornelius, Liam Millar and Ismael Kone all hooked at the break. 

Their replacements Kamal Miller, Jonathan Osorio and Jacob Shaffelburg are now in contention to start, with Marsch having switched from a 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1 for the win against Peru. 

With Chile yet to score a goal in this tournament, Villarreal forward Ben Brereton Diaz looks likely to come into Ricardo Gareca’s 4-2-3-1.

Having secured their first ever Copa America victory, Canada are looking to make history by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time. 

The last time that Chile failed to make it out of the group stage of this tournament was 2004. 

Chile have had 14 shots at goal at the Copa America, failing to score with any of them and with only four having been on target. 

Prediction

Canada won their first match since Marsch’s appointment as manager, at their fourth attempt, having previously faced heavyweights like the Netherlands, France and Argentina. 

The Canadians had failed to score a goal in those first three games and were again struggling to make a breakthrough, until Peru’s Miguel Araujo was sent off.

With the numerical advantage, Lille forward Jonathan David scored the decisive goal in a match where Les Rouges had 49% of the possession and managed just two efforts on target from five attempts. 

With a win in the bag, Marsch could now be tempted to send his side out to frustrate Chile, having kept two clean sheets in their last three games. 

Chile’s lack of goals is a worry for head coach Ricardo Gareca, having scored plenty during the start of his reign. 

The veteran coach was appointed in January and Chile beat Albania 3-0 in his opening game, before losing 3-2 to France and then defeating Paraguay 3-0 earlier this month. 

After drawing 0-0 with Peru in their first match in Group A, La Roja looked destined for another goalless draw against Argentina, until Lautaro Martinez scored the winner for the World Cup holders.

Chile really need to go for it, but as we have seen at the final group games of Euro 2024, teams often find themselves playing cautiously in such situations and this could be another low scoring match.
