Brighton were left to rue their profligacy in front of goal as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home against a stubborn Newcastle side.

The visitors looked as though they had broken the deadlock early on as Callum Wilson fired into the far corner — but it was ruled out for a high boot. 

Brighton dominated the game thereafter and Solly March twice saw the ball cleared off the line, with first Kieran Trippier and then Fabian Schar rescuing the Magpies.

The Seagulls winger also set Adam Lallana up early in the second half but Nick Pope produced a fantastic stop to ensure Newcastle escaped with a point.

Brighton boss Graham Potter was effusive in his praise of his side's performance.

He said: "The performance was fantastic. Although we should have won we're incredibly proud. We were playing against a top team. 

"Credit to the goalkeeper. We just missed that last little bit. We knew how tough it was going to be against Newcastle, with the way they set up and how good they are on the counter-attack."

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe rued Wilson's disallowed goal but admitted to being pleased at securing a draw.

He said: "I'd need to see [Wilson's disallowed goal] again. My initial reaction was I thought it was harsh and given too quickly. The decision could have been let go to see what VAR said but it wasn't to be.

"You are always disappointed not to win but very pleased with a point in the end, especially in the second half. I thought it was a difficult second half for us. 

"Dan Burn hadn't played left-back for a long time, but I thought he did very well. Overall very pleased with his performance and his attitude to a different position."
