Southampton's Premier League winless streak stretched to four games as they were beaten 3-0 at Brentford.

The Bees went in front in the 13th minute with Ivan Toney the provider. He collected Christian Eriksen's corner and fired back across goal for Pontus Jansson to turn home from close range.

The hosts made it 2-0 just a minute later as Yoane Wissa pounced on a loose ball after Eriksen was tackled, steering a low finish into the bottom corner.

Kristoffer Ajer became the second Brentford defender to get on the scoresheet late on. He received the ball on the turn and brushed past two Southampton defenders before slotting through Fraser Forster's legs.

Southampton head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl suggested his side can not be assured of safety yet.

He said: "They were the better team in and around the boxes. If you do nice things in between the two boxes it's not interesting. They have been the far better team.

"We knew how we can create but it's up to us up front to take something from the chances. Otherwise, all the effort we put in is for nothing.

"They've shown how you can win a game in the moment. We're far away from having the quality to win games. That's what we have to change.

"We are struggling to score goals. It's not only on our strikers. We have defended really poorly today.

"Forty points might not be enough [to stay up]. Two games [to go] so we have to be absolutely focused."

Meanwhile, Brentford boss Thomas Frank challenged his side to finish as high as possible.

He said: "I didn't know that [Brentford have same number of points as Norwich and Watford combined]. I don't know the exact stats, but there's one of the promoted sides that has done well in the next season.

"But it just shows it is one out of three, and you can't predict if it's first, second or the play-off winners.

"I've never said about [finishing in the top 10]. I would like to say aim as high as possible but, of course, if that could happen, that would be the cherry on the cake to top it off with a top 10 finish."

Southampton have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games (D2 L7). Since the start of March, only relegated sides Norwich (four) and Watford (three) have picked up fewer points (five for Southampton) with the Saints shipping more goals than anyone else in that time (24).

In the nine Premier League games since Eriksen's first start for Brentford, the Bees have accrued 19 points (W6 D1 L2), having managed just four from the nine matches before that (W1 D1 L7).

Eriksen has provided three assists for Brentford in nine league appearances, one more than he registered for Inter Milan in 43 Serie A outings.

Southampton have shipped more goals in the first 15 minutes of Premier League games than any other side this season (12). There were just 77 seconds between Brentford's first two goals.

Excluding penalties, Wissa is Brentford's top scorer this season in all competitions with nine goals.
