Taylor eye injury postpones rematch with Catterall for second time
Josh Taylor's much-anticipated rematch with Jack Catterall has been postponed for a second time.
Taylor, 33, injured his foot in January, causing the original March fight date to be put back to April 27.
And now a problem with the Scot's eye has led to the super-lightweight scrap being moved again to May 25 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.
A Matchroom Boxing statement confirmed: "Taylor suffered an injury in training and his upcoming fight with Catterall on April 27 has been postponed.
"The fight will now move to May 25 at the same venue in Leeds — live on DAZN."
Taylor posted on Instagram: "I had a minor eye procedure at the beginning of February. I attended a final check-up yesterday expecting to be signed off by the medical team.
"However, I was told that my recovery had slowed and I was advised to postpone the fight."
Catterall, who lost the first contest on a controversial split decision in February 2022, wrote on social media: "Apologies to all the fans. I'll be there May 25.
"All he's done is stalled the beating he's going to get and I promise you all I will rid this guy out of boxing once and for all."
Scottish southpaw Taylor, nicknamed the Tartan Tornado, had enjoyed an unblemished professional record before losing his WBO world title to New Yorker Teofimo Lopez at Madison Square Garden last June.
Catterall, 30, also has just one loss to his name — the fight in Glasgow against Taylor, which saw the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO super-lightweight belts on the line.
The Lancashire southpaw has since enjoyed unanimous decision victories against both Darragh Foley and Jorge Linares.
At last month's news conference, promoter Eddie Hearn said: "Careers are on the line in this fight.
"You lose this fight, you're done. Taylor loses this fight, he'll never fight again. Catterall loses this fight, what's he going to do? His world title dreams are finished.
"This is a massive all-British fight, Scotland vs England, the controversy of the first fight, the hatred. This is called Hate Runs Deep. I know hate is a strong word but this is real."
