Bournemouth responded to Scott Parker’s sacking by holding out for a goalless draw against Wolves at the Vitality stadium.

Gary O'Neil was put in charge of the match as caretaker manager and while the Cherries did ride their luck, conceding a lot of possession and chances, they held out for a valuable point.

Wolves will be disappointed to leave the south coast without the win, as Raul Jimenez and Daniel Podence had glorious chances to break the deadlock in the second half.

The point leaves both in sorry positions, with Wolves sitting in the relegation zone and Bournemouth not far above in 16th.

Bournemouth captain Lloyd Kelly was thrilled to have kept a clean sheet after conceding nine goals against Liverpool.

He said: "As defenders, we cherish these moments. We want to keep as many clean sheets as possible.

"Towards the end of the game, we were throwing our bodies on the line — and in the end, it's paid off. It's just reading the game and sensing danger. When you're under pressure, you need to produce.

"It's been a bit of a whirlwind situation for everyone involved. We wanted to make sure we put on a performance and we want to hit the season running now. The next couple of games will be good for us.

"A clean sheet is massive — it's something that you love, as defenders, stopping goals going in. You leave the rest to the attacking players. Credit to us as defenders."

Wolves manager Bruno Lage insisted that there is no need to get frustrated with the lack of goals from his side.

He said: "We are frustrated that we didn't score but I said to the players now is no time to cry for the chances that we missed.

"One more word for the fans: Be patient and trust in us."

Did you know?

Wolves have scored just two goals after five games in successive Premier League campaigns — they had only scored two or fewer at this stage twice in their previous 65 top-flight seasons.

Despite the Cherries conceding 16 times in the league so far this season, only two teams (Manchester City and Brighton — both three) have more clean sheets than their two in 2022-23.

Bournemouth kept a clean sheet the game after conceding nine against Liverpool — the last team in England’s top four tiers to do the same was Wigan in November 2009 (9-1 vs Spurs, 1-0 vs Sunderland).

Bournemouth have failed to score in each of their last four Premier League matches. The last time they didn’t score for that many games in a row was between December 2019 and January 2020, losing all four in that streak.

Jimenez has now gone 11 top-flight outings without a goal for Wolves — that is his longest streak without scoring for the club in the top tier.
