Bayern Munich to win

Arsenal snapped a sequence of seven successive Champions League round-of-16 eliminations when achieving a penalty-shootout success over Porto at the Emirates last month and they will be looking to make further progress when taking on Bayern Munich in their quarter-final second leg at the Allianz Arena.

The Gunners salvaged a 2-2 draw from last Tuesday’s first leg at the Emirates thanks to Leandro Trossard’s 76th-minute goal.

However, Bayern are in a strong position thanks to a couple of first-half goals, including Harry Kane’s nerveless penalty.

The Bavarians have reached the Champions League semi-finals on nine occasions in the last 16 seasons, but they have lost their last three quarter-final encounters.

Team news

Bayern Munich left-back Raphael Guerreiro is expected to come in for Alphonso Davies, who serves a one-match ban after accumulating three yellow cards.

Serge Gnabry (hamstring) and Kingsley Coman (groin) have joined Sacha Boey (hip), Bouna Sarr, Gabriel Marusic (both knee) and Tarek Buchmann (hamstring) on the injured list.

Leroy Sane (knock) is a doubt and will have to be assessed closer to kick-off.

Martin Odegaard (unspecified injury) is a doubt and Jurrien Timber (knee) remains absent.

Gabriel Jesus is pushing for a start and there are three possible choices at left back with Jakub Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu vying for inclusion.

Bayern have advanced from 17 of their last 18 Champions League knockout ties when avoiding defeat in the first leg.

The Bavarians have won 19 of their last 23 Champions League home games, while they are unbeaten in their last 14 Champions League home fixtures.

Arsenal have lost eight of their last nine Champions League knockout ties.

The Gunners have gone two consecutive matches without a victory for the first time in 2024.

Six of Arsenal’s last eight away matches have featured at least three goals.

Prediction

Bayern Munich delivered a reasonably assured performance to claim a 2-2 draw at the Emirates last Tuesday and they can finish the job by defeating Arsenal at the Allianz Arena.

The Bavarians have been unable to keep pace with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race but they retain the capacity to rise to the occasion on Champions League nights.

They defeated Lazio 3-1 on aggregate in the round of 16 and are likely to cause problems for Arsenal, who seem to have lost their swagger at a key stage of the season.

The Gunners were edgy for large parts of the opening leg and endured a disastrous end to Sunday’s Premier League clash at home to Aston Villa, resulting in a damaging 2-0 defeat.

Mikel Arteta’s side have not had much time to clear their heads and they look set to fall short against Bayern, who may have the edge in terms of individual quality and experience.
