India to win

India can secure a place in the last four of the T20 World Cup by seeing off Australia, who could yet be eliminated with defeat due to the tight nature of Group 1.

Monday's clash at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium will help decide the outcome of the group and a second successive Australian defeat could mean Afghanistan, who shocked the Baggy Greens on Saturday night when winning by 21 runs, could leapfrog them and finish second to progress to the semis.

Afghanistan finish their Super 8 campaign against Bangladesh but, crucially, they play after Australia so will know what they need to do in order to go through.

With both sides on two points as it stands, it could all come down to net run-rate to decide who makes the last four.

Team news

Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar got the nod ahead of Mitchell Starc for Australia against against Afghanistan and after he conceded just 17 runs from his four overs, will hope to keep his place in the side to face India.

The Aussies are unlikely to tinker with their batting order despite only managing a disappointing total of 127 on Saturday.

India are expected to be unchanged following two wins from two over Afghanistan and Bangladesh in the Super 8 stage.

The stats

Australia looked well on course for the semi-finals after winning their four group matches in the competition against Oman, England, Namibia and Scotland before beating Bangladesh in their first Super 8 game.

India have won all five of their games in the T20 World Cup, seeing off Ireland, Pakistan and USA in the group stage and then Afghanistan and Bangladesh in the Super 8s so far.

India have triumphed in six of the last seven T20I meetings between the two sides.

Prediction

India are understandably favourites to win the competition after registering back-to-back victories in their first two Super 8s games — beating Afghanistan by 47 runs and then Bangladesh by 50 runs.

In both matches they have batted first and posted fine scores of 181-8 and 196-5 with Suryakumar Yadav top-scoring with 53 against the Afghans, before Hardik Pandya was 50 not out and Virat Kohli ominously made 37 from just 23 balls against the Tigers.

India have been devastating with the ball in the competition so far, with right-arm quick Jasprit Bumrah posting incredible figures of 10-65 from five games, while left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh has taken 12 wickets at an average of 11.75.

Australia also looked in good shape before the shock loss to Afghanistan – which was their first-ever T20 defeat to the Afghans – and their confidence may have taken a hit, despite Pat Cummins making history when he became the first player to take a hat-trick in two successive T20 internationals.

India's superb form so far in the tournament cannot be ignored and that, coupled with the fact they have won six of the last seven T20I meetings with the Aussies, suggests Rohit Sharma's side will prevail in Gros Islet.
