The Ashes: Green ready to put England to the sword
England's success in The Ashes has often been attributed to superstar performances from generational all-rounders.
Ian Botham in 1981, Andrew Flintoff in 2005 and Ben Stokes in 2019 are the names and years that instantly spring to mind.
Stokes will try and write more history in the upcoming 2023 series but this time around Australia have their own multifaceted weapon in Cameron Green.
Ahead of the first day of this year's Ashes at Edgbaston on Friday, we shine the spotlight on the 24-year-old who is taking the cricket world by storm.
Test breakthrough
Green, a towering batting all-rounder, made his Test debut against India in December 2020 and was then a regular during Australia's 4-0 victory in the 2021-22 Ashes.
He has featured in 21 matches, scoring 972 runs at an average of 36.00 — a superior record to England captain Stokes (35.92).
The Perth-born lynchpin recorded his finest knock to date against India in March, where he scored 114 off 170 deliveries.
With the ball, Green has also contributed significantly. He has taken 25 wickets at an average of 33.84, with his best figures of 5-27 coming against South Africa last December.
Australia captain Pat Cummins has already likened his team-mate to Stokes.
He said: "Greeny's a real luxury to have as a captain. He's a fifth bowling option to bowl as many overs as we need, and we've seen what Ben Stokes has done with England.
"Having that key all-rounder in your top six can make a big difference at times. He keeps growing and growing."
Multi-format star
Like a lot of modern-day players, Green excels for his country across multiple formats.
From 15 one-day internationals, the Western Australian averages a hugely impressive 50.33 with the bat, despite the fact he has yet to hit a century in that particular arena.
His highest score of 89 not out against New Zealand last year steered the Aussies to an unlikely victory and saw him named Player of the Match.
With the ball he has also impressed, taking 11 wickets at an average of 34.27 — which again is superior to Stokes who averages 42.39 in the format.
Green's experience and success in limited overs cricket could prove crucial in Australia's battle against England's free-flowing Bazball approach under head coach Brendon McCullum.
IPL heroics
As well as playing an important role in his side's World Test Championship final victory over India at The Oval, Green will enter the Ashes theatre on the back of a successful Indian Premier League campaign.
The right-handed batsman performed superbly as Mumbai Indians reached the knockout stage of the competition.
Green scored 452 runs at an average of 50.22, while also recording a superb strike rate of 160.28.
His ability to reach the boundary rope with ease makes him the perfect counter-attacking option if England's bowlers get on top.
Australia's assistant coach Daniel Vettori said: "He [Green] offers so much to the team and had a great series in India for us and then is coming off the back of a successful IPL.
"It's great he's got some confidence, he's a huge part of the side."
