Newcastle have completed the signing of AC Milan playmaker Sandro Tonali on a five-year contract.

The Italian, 23, will offer Eddie Howe another stellar option in midfield alongside established star Bruno Guimaraes.

Toon chiefs have completed their first big-money capture of a busy summer, coughing up a reported transfer fee of around £68.5million.

Tonali, who came through Brescia's youth ranks, already has 130 Serie A appearances under his belt and 14 international caps.

On making the switch to St James' Park, he said: "First of all, I want to thank Newcastle because they are giving me a huge opportunity for my career.

"I want to repay the trust on the pitch, giving it my all, as I always have. I'm really excited about playing at St James' Park, I can't wait to feel the warmth of the fans."

Howe will hope the Serie A winner will bring an exciting blend of youth and experience as he looks to assemble a squad capable of competing domestically as well as in the Champions League.

On his new signing, the Newcastle boss said: "He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us.

"At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe's top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country.

"But he also has the opportunity and potential to grow and evolve with us, and I'm excited to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead."

The Magpies kick off their pre-season preparation against Gateshead on July 15.
