Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino says Mykhailo Mudryk needs to "understand the game better" after failing to impress on his first start of the season at Bournemouth.

Mudryk, an £89million signing last January, could not inspire the Blues in a 0-0 stalemate at the Vitality Stadium which leaves Pochettino's men with just one win from their first five Premier League games.

Substituted in the 63rd minute after a quiet performance, the 22-year-old Ukrainian is without a single goal in 21 games in all competitions for Chelsea.

Pochettino told Sky Sports: "He is improving. He still needs to learn. The Premier League is very fast, the speed of the game is so fast.

"I think it's about understanding the game better, try to be more connected sometimes with the team.

"We need to give the time and to give the tools for him to improve during the season."

Mudryk is part of a staggering £1billion splurge since Todd Boehly bought Chelsea but their spending has yet to translate into success, with the draw leaving the Blues with five points from their five league games this term.

Boos were heard from the away section on the South Coast at full-time and Pochettino suggested he understands the frustration from supporters.

The 51-year-old said: "I'm not going to ask the fans for patience. They need to behave how they want to behave.

"We cannot put excuses because I think it was a club decision to do what we need to do but that is the process that we need, to be strong in our belief.

"Of course we are disappointed because the fans are disappointed because of the situation."
