Atletico Madrid's winning streak came to a disappointing end as they lost 2-1 to newly-promoted Las Palmas.

Diego Simeone's side had won six games on the bounce in LaLiga before the surprise defeat, which saw them miss the chance to move top of LaLiga.

Instead, Real Madrid can now go six points clear of their city rivals if they beat Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

The game was 0-0 heading into the interval but the hosts started the second half full of energy, with Kirian Rodriguez pouncing on Alberto Moleiro’s pass to power a low strike past Jan Oblak.

Despite the visitors desperately pushing for the equaliser, it was substitute Benito Ramirez who doubled Las Palmas' lead in the 75th minute.

Spain striker Alvaro Morata pulled one back with seven minutes remaining but despite nearly 10 minutes of stoppage time, the spirited hosts held on for a memorable success.

Simeone admitted that his side got what they deserved after a sub-par performance.

The Argentine coach, 53, said: "They [Las Palmas] played very well, deserved the victory. We did not play the game we wanted to play.

"Congratulations to the opponent, they played a great game and deserved it.

"The boys gave everything. They have been making an effort game after game with great determination.

"In the first half we had possible goal situations, and in the second too. This time it couldn't be."

Las Palmas have now won five of their last seven in the league and picked up an impressive 17 points from 12 games.

Given their ambition was just to avoid relegation this term, Garcia Pimienta's side will be delighted with their start to life back in Spain's top division.

Meanwhile, Simeone will have to pick his side up quickly as they host Scottish side Celtic in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
