Palace Pier "sets the standard"

Andre Fabre believes Palace Pier is the stand-out contender to scoop the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

Fabre, who has won the race a joint-record seven times, will run Victor Ludorum in the contest after returning to winning ways at Chantilly last month.

John and Thady Gosden's Palace Pier won last year's contest and Fabre expects the three-year-old to be the one to catch this time around.

"He's going to run, he won nicely last time and if the ground dries up that will help him," said Fabre of Victor Ludorum.

"It will have helped his confidence winning last time out. I'm quite confident he's going to run well.

"I haven't been that impressed by the three-year-old generation this season, to be honest — so I think Palace Pier remains the one to beat. I think Palace Pier sets the standard to aim at."

Pyledriver pulled from York

There will be a gaping hole in the field at next week's Juddmonte International Stakes in York after Pyledriver was withdrawn.

The four-year-old had to miss last month's King George due to a pulled muscle and he hasn't been able to fully recover in time.

He sustained the issue just four days prior to the Ascot Group 1 in July and joint-trainer William Muir delivered the news on Wednesday.

Muir said: "He's still quite tender on that muscle, so I had a long chat with the owners last night and told them if I can't gallop it's going to be too close to the race.

"I can't go there undercooked because he could get a serious injury, as at the moment we just have a pulled muscle."

Mojo Star set for Newbury trip

Derby runner-up Mojo Star will attempt to open his account in the Academy Insurance British EBF Maiden Stakes.

The three-year-old is being lined up for the Cazoo St Leger at Doncaster next month and trainer Richard Hannon feels Newbury offers the perfect preparation.

Mojo Star was last seen when coming home fifth at the Curragh in June after finishing second on his three previous outings.

"He's going to go to Newbury on Saturday in a mile-and-a-half maiden," said Hannon.

"He's in great form. He's had a break. He's run in two Derbys. Hopefully this will be easier and a nice stepping stone to go onto the Leger."

Meade considering Great Voltigeur

Richard Meade is keeping his options open for Lone Eagle and admits the Great Voltigeur Stakes is under consideration.

Lone Eagle came a narrow second to Hurricane Lane in the Irish Derby on his penultimate start and he was the last of five home in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes last time out.

Meade admits he is yet to make a decision on where his three-year-old will go next but revealed York is a possibility.

"We're certainly looking at that (Great Voltigeur), for sure," Meade said.

"He's just having a bit of a quiet time at the moment, so we've got no plans right now," said the Manton-based trainer.

"It [the Melbourne Cup] is a bit of a long shot, I would say. The part-owners are from Australia and obviously he's got every right to be considered for that, but it's fair to say it's a long shot."
