Last weekend’s Clasico had implications for the LaLiga title race but Atletico Madrid reclaimed top spot with eight rounds to go.

Diego Simeone’s men have city rivals Real Madrid hot on their tails and will need to improve on a run of three wins in their last nine if they are to maintain their grip on first place.

Both clubs from the capital face teams scrapping for their lives at the bottom in Eibar and Getafe, who will be as desperate to avoid the drop as their opponents are to win silverware, setting up two scintillating clashes on Sunday.

Osasuna vs Elche (Sunday, 1pm)

LaLiga’s relegation battle could not be tighter, with the division’s bottom five sides separated by just four points ahead of this weekend.

Elche will view their upcoming clash with mid-table Osasuna as the perfect opportunity to end their run of five matches without victory and climb out of the drop zone.

However, the visitors have failed to win any of their last 14 on the road.

They will need to conjure up more goalscoring opportunities to stand any chance of picking up maximum points — no team has had fewer shots (6.57) or shots on target (2.3) per 90 minutes than Los Franjiverdes in 2020-21.

Real Sociedad vs Sevilla (Sunday, 1pm)

Sevilla’s spot in next season’s Champions League looks all but certain — and Julen Lopetegui’s outfit will fancy their chances of extending a 14-point lead over fifth-placed Sociedad.

Los Palanganas have won four of their last five matches, while their Basque opponents have gone four league games without victory.

This could be a tight affair between two of Spain’s best defences.

Both Sociedad (5.07 per 90) and Sevilla (5.73 per 90) are inside LaLiga’s top three teams when it comes to the number of shots they’ve allowed against them from inside the box this season.

Julen Lopetegui's Sevilla are close to securing a spot in next season's Champions League

Alaves vs Huesca (Sunday, 3.15pm)

It does not get much bigger than this at the foot of the table, as strugglers Alaves and Huesca meet for a relegation six-pointer at Mendizorrotza.

Confidence will be low at Alaves after six defeats in their last eight but Javier Calleja’s team will need to keep their discipline in this mammoth contest — no team in Spain’s top flight have had more red cards this season (seven).

Meanwhile, resurgent Huesca are bidding to make a small piece of history.

They have never won three consecutive matches in LaLiga but victory on Sunday would consign that stat to history.

Atletico Madrid vs Eibar (Sunday, 3.15pm)

Diego Simeone knows his Atletico Madrid side are in danger of throwing the LaLiga title away

After dominating the division for much of the season, Atletico’s form has deserted them just when it matters most.

Luckily, opponents do not come much easier than bottom club Eibar, who have now gone an incredible 13 league games without a win. That is their worst streak in Spain’s top flight.

The Azulgranas’ chances of breaching Atleti’s imperious defence would appear to be slim — they are the joint-lowest scorers in the league (0.73 per 90), while the home side have conceded the fewest goals in LaLiga (0.67 per 90).

Getafe vs Real Madrid (Sunday, 8pm)

Fresh from their Clasico triumph over Barcelona last weekend, Real Madrid are chasing down Atletico at the top and are now unbeaten in 10 league matches.

Karim Benzema continues to score goals at an alarming pace — he now has nine in his last seven league games. The last player to score in eight consecutive fixtures was Lionel Messi in February 2019.

It is the aerial battle where Madrid perhaps pose the greatest threat. They have registered the most headed goals in LaLiga (0.43 per 90).

Worryingly for Getafe, they have suffered more defeats (23) and conceded more goals (73) against their Madrid neighbours than any other LaLiga team.

Sunday's other games

Cadiz vs Celta Vigo (5.30pm)
Real Betis vs Valencia (5.30pm)
Levante vs Villarreal (8pm)
