Arteta Guns down striker talks

Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal are underperforming in front of goal — but insists the Gunners are not thinking of signing a striker in January.

Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah started up front together in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham but both were criticised for failing to find the net.

Ahead of tonight's Carabao Cup tie with Brentford, Arteta said: "There's various ways to score goals and we are scoring goals.

"But we should have scored many more with the chances we have created."

Arsenal have been strongly linked with a move for Ivan Toney in January, when the Brentford striker will have finished serving an eight-month ban for betting breaches.

But asked whether the North Londoners would be in the market for a No9, the Spaniard responded: "We're not thinking at all about that. We have really good players up front.

"It's true that right now we have some injuries. We will continue with the players we have."

James hit with charge

Reece James has been hit with an FA charge

Reece James has been charged by the FA for using abusive language towards an official after Chelsea's defeat by Aston Villa — despite not being in the squad for the game.

Captain James, 23, remains injured for Mauricio Pochettino's men but it is alleged the England international confronted an official in the Stamford Bridge tunnel following the 1-0 loss last Sunday.

Ollie Watkins scored a 73rd-minute winner for Villa after the Blues went down to 10-men following right-back Malo Gusto's straight red card mid-way through the second half.

A statement said: "Reece James has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 following Chelsea’s Premier League game against Aston Villa on Sunday, September 24.

"It's alleged that the defender used improper and/or insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards a match official in the tunnel after the game.

"Reece James has until Friday, September 29 to provide a response to this charge."

Failing to ful-Phil potential

Kalvin Phillps has made three appearances from the bench for Manchester City this season

Pep Guardiola admits he has failed to get the best out of Kalvin Phillips at Manchester City.

England midfielder Phillips has endured a miserable time since his £45million move from Leeds in the summer of 2022.

The 27-year-old will make just his fifth start for the club when the Citizens take on Newcastle in the Carabao Cup at St James' Park tonight.

Ahead of that clash, Guardiola admitted: "Marcelo [Bielsa] gave Kalvin the best of Kalvin in his career.

"I'd love to have done with Kalvin what Marcelo has done to him.

"We have our own specific way to play and [he] sometimes struggles in a few things, while the previous [playing style] was perfect [for him]."

Choudhury extends Foxes stay

Hamza Choudhury has signed a new contract with Leicester until 2027.

The Foxes academy graduate, 25, has made 91 appearances for the East Midlands club since breaking into the first team in 2017.

He has had five outings in the Championship this term, including one from the start.

Choudhury said: "It's an amazing feeling for me and my family. This is my home. I've obviously spent the majority of my life here around the same people in the same environment.

"I'm looking forward to cracking on now and hopefully helping the team get back to the Premier League.

"It's my home. To be staying here for another four years is exactly what I want."

Stuck in the Mud

Mauricio Pochettino is trying to get a tune out of Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has been playing crossbar challenge with Mykhailo Mudryk to try and improve the struggling winger's confidence.

The Ukraine international is still yet to open his account in 22 appearances for the Blues since his £89million move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January.

Ahead of their cup clash with Brighton tonight, Pochettino said: "With Mudryk, I like to play sometimes to [hit] the crossbar from outside the box.

"He said to me, 'I don't want to play anymore with you because you always win'.

"I said, 'Yes, because I have the belief, and the balance between belief and quality I know very well because I'm 50 years old. You're still young and you need to know yourself'.

"Today [Tuesday] was the first day we drew because I always won. Now you start to believe in yourself, believe in your quality. If not, it's difficult to balance belief and quality."

Icardi's blunder

Galatasaray striker Mauro Icardi recreated Thierry Henry and Robert Pires' infamous penalty blunder in the Turkish Super Lig last night.

Icardi side-footed the ball wide after running onto team-mate Kerem Akturkoglu's pass from the spot despite having most of the net to aim at.

Fans were quick to compare the sitter to Arsenal duo Henry and Pires' similar attempt against Manchester City at Highbury in 2005.

Despite the embarrassing moment, former Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain striker Icardi redeemed himself by scoring five minutes later in the 1-0 win over Istanbulspor.

Edwards demands more

Rob Edwards' Luton crashed out of the Carabao Cup against Exeter

Rob Edwards says there are no excuses for Luton's shock 1-0 Carabao Cup defeat to League One Exeter.

The Hatters, who are second bottom in the Premier League, made 10 changes for the third-round clash and crashed out thanks to Demetri Mitchell's late winner.

After their miserable start to the campaign continued, Edwards demanded more from his side in the final third.

He said: "I thought there were elements of the performance that were OK, but we certainly have got to find the quality, desire, devilment to break teams down.

"Tonight we had a lot of the ball, they defended with six and gave no space around the box and credit to them for doing that well.

"We've got to be better in that final third, no excuses at all, so it's disappointing."
