Diaz speaks

Luis Diaz has revealed how his disallowed goal in Liverpool's 2-1 loss at Tottenham affected him and his team-mates.

The Colombian forward's strike soon after Curtis Jones' first-half red card was controversially chalked off for offside, with VAR officials failing to realise he was onside and then not overturning the on-field decision.

Diaz told El Heraldo: "The goal issue was a bit complicated.

"At the time, it hit me very hard but not only to me but to all my team-mates.

"In the middle of the game, we talked about it a lot. It was a positive result that was going to help us.

"These are things that happen, the referees are human. You have to take it easy."

Sevilla make their move

Sevilla have appointed Uruguayan coach Diego Alonso as their new manager.

Jose Luis Mendilibar was relieved of his duties last Sunday after the Andalusian's 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano, leaving them 14th in LaLiga with just two wins from eight matches.

Alonso, 48, arrives at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan with significant pedigree, having managed in both the United States and Mexico.

His last role was in charge of the Uruguay national team, which he left last December after the South American nation exited the 2022 World Cup at the group stage.

Ciaran's new home

Stoke have confirmed the signing of Ciaran Clark on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

The Republic of Ireland defender, 34, was released by Newcastle in the summer after a loan spell at Sheffield United last term.

Clark said: "I've missed the feeling of being in the dressing room and preparing week-to-week for Saturdays.

"I worked hard throughout pre-season and have kept myself in good shape since, so I am keen to get out there with the lads over the next couple of weeks, as the feeling of those sessions is something you can't replicate alone.

"With the quality of players we have, if we find some consistency, I believe we can go on and have a good season."

Alex Neil's Potters lie 21st in the Championship with 10 points from their opening 11 fixtures.

Garcia under pressure

Rudi Garcia's Napoli are struggling in Serie A this season

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has cast more doubt on the future of manager Rudi Garcia, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

The Frenchman took over from Luciano Spalletti in the summer and has endured a tough start in Naples, with the Italian champions currently fifth in Serie A after losing 3-1 to Fiorentina last Sunday.

De Laurentiis is reported as saying: "It's not a good moment with manager Garcia.

"When you decide to go for a coach who doesn't know Italian football any more, it can happen.

"I'll make the best decision at the right moment. I can't be influenced by fans."

Sky Italia report ex-Juventus and Chelsea coach Antonio Conte is being considered as Garcia's replacement.

Davies gets the call

Curtis Davies is set to make his senior international debut at 38

Curtis Davies has been called up for Sierra Leone's friendlies against Benin and Somalia, over 15 years after he was included in Fabio Capello's first England squad.

The 38-year-old, currently at League One outfit Cheltenham, played three times for the Three Lions' Under-21s but never debuted for the senior side and will now represent the nation of his father's birth.

Davies wrote on Twitter: "I'm delighted to formally announce that I will be joining the Sierra Leone national team for their upcoming friendlies.

"I thought the opportunity to represent the country of my father's birth had passed but I feel very proud and humbled to have received the call.

"It will be a proud moment for me to pull on the shirt of The Leone Stars and make my family in Sierra Leone proud but most of all my dad.

"He did everything in his power to give me the best chance to become a footballer, so I dedicate this all to him. Looking forward to getting going."

Groenen's groans

Jackie Groenen joined Paris Saint-Germain from Manchester United in 2022

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jackie Groenen has questioned the format of the Women's Champions League.

The French side take on debutants Manchester United today in the second qualifying round, with both Arsenal and Juventus exiting the competition in the first qualifying round.

Groenen said: "I think it is a bit strange — big teams going out in the pre-phase.

"I wonder if it's the right way to go. Don't get me wrong, it's always nice to play big games and I think from all the draws we could have had Manchester United was the hardest one we could draw.

"On one hand I don't fully agree with the system but on the other hand I'm excited to play a game with this magnitude and pressure."

Unlike the first, the second round will be played over two legs and will determine which 12 teams join automatic qualifiers Barcelona, Lyon, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Keown backs City

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City lost to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal last Sunday

Arsenal legend Martin Keown says Manchester City are still favourites to win the Premier League despite the Gunners' 1-0 victory at the Emirates last Sunday.

Gabriel Martinelli scored a late winner for the North Londoners, who sit above Pep Guardiola's side in the table going into the international break.

Keown acknowledged Mikel Arteta's men have closed the gap to City but is still backing last season's Treble winners to clinch a fourth consecutive title.

The former defender, 57, said: "City are favourites. Two seasons in a row they've managed to win as many as 32 games and last season they won 44 matches.

"It's kind of a work in progress for Arsenal at the moment.

"We're not talking about any ordinary team in City, we're talking about a team who are conquering Europe right now."
