Trent on top

Virgil van Dijk labelled his Liverpool team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold as the "complete package" after his excellent performance against Manchester City on Saturday.

The Premier League giants played out a 1-1 draw at the Etihad with the England international scoring an 80th-minute equaliser for the Reds.

Van Dijk said: "He offers a lot defensively and, obviously in possession, he has qualities that are very special and he shows that as well, so he has the complete package.

"He has to keep doing what he's doing, keep improving, keep that high standard he has for himself and we all have for him as well.

"I think everyone this season, as a defender, one-on-one against [Jeremy] Doku will have a tough afternoon. He's a very good dribbler.

"But I don't think he had a tough afternoon on the whole. It's how you defend them together and try to get two on one in situations and, in the end, I'm pleased for him that he got the equaliser."

Bolasie's return

Yannick Bolasie spent time on loan at Middlesbrough before moving to Turkey

Swansea have signed former Crystal Palace winger Yannick Bolasie on a short-term loan deal.

The 34-year-old joined the Championship side on a two-month contract having been a free agent since the summer.

Swans manager Michael Duff said: "Yannick's been in the building for a week.

"He hasn't got the pace and power he once had, but you don't get bought for £25million if you don't know how to handle a football.

"It'll be a two-month deal and we'll see how it goes from there."

Bolasie most recently played for Turkish side Caykur Rizespor and returns to England after three years having previously featured for Everton and Middlesbrough.

Special delivery

Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho share a moment after their win over Everton

Bruno Fernandes believes Alejandro Garnacho is capable of becoming a special player after the Manchester United winger scored a magnificent overhead kick against Everton.

Garnacho channelled his inner Cristiano Ronaldo and replicated his idol's special strike against Juventus back in 2018.

Fernandes said: "It's amazing — something out of this world, I think.

"Probably he's watching too much Cristiano clips! We all know that he's a big fan. Still a long way for him to be like Cristiano but he's getting his steps.

"He wants to be something special in the world of football and I think he has the capability to do that, but he has to do more than that goal."

Garnacho scored on his third consecutive start for United who move to within six points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Down but not out

Heung-Min Son's efforts were not enough to see off Aston Villa

Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son admits the players are hurt by their poor run of results but are remaining positive under Ange Postecoglou.

The North London outfit fell to their third consecutive Premier League defeat at the hands of Aston Villa on Sunday despite dominating the game.

Son said: "I think especially in this game, when you are 1-0 up, we have to control even more.

"We have to respect the [opposition] and we made a couple of mistakes this season where we are going up 1-0 and started playing a little bit slowly.

"Yeah, we created chances, good, very good. The way we are playing, I am very pleased and happy but it hurts when you lose a game, especially at home.

"We had such amazing support again and losing this game hurts."

BBC director of sport Barbara Slater said: "What will make this year's awards even more special is that we are marking 70 years of the programme.

"Over the last seven decades, the public has decided who its sporting heroes are, from grassroots to professional, and that's what makes Sports Personality of the Year so important."

Match of the Day host Lineker, 62, added: "Sport is so important. It allows for escapism and gets our juices flowing.

"One element of Sports Personality I have always been impressed by is the superb turnout. It shows that people want to win it."

Seaman's tribute

The football world has been paying their respects to the great Terry Venables

Former England and Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman has paid tribute to the late Terry Venables.

The 60-year-old was the Three Lions' No1 during their run to the semi-finals of Euro 1996 and has fond memories of his old boss and friend.

He said: "He was just a great guy, he was brilliant at man-to-man management.

"I'll never forget the day before the tournament he came up to me when he got the job, looked me straight in the eyes and said you’re my England No1 and the confidence I gained is something I'll never forget.

Publicidad

"I know we had gone out in the semi-final but he wanted us to know we had really achieved something.

"We got England to the semi-final at Wembley and the most important thing he'd done was that the England fans started loving the England team again because of the way we played. He was just a really nice guy."
