Sarr pens new deal

Pape Matar Sarr has signed a new long-term contract with Tottenham, keeping him at the club until 2030.

The Senegal midfielder, 21, has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough at Spurs this term, becoming a regular in Ange Postecoglou's new-look side.

Sarr has featured in 18 of Tottenham's 20 Premier League games, with the North Londoners currently fifth.

Signed from Metz in August 2021, the youngster was loaned back to the Ligue 1 outfit before making 14 appearances for Spurs last term.

He scored his first goal for the Lilywhites in a 2-0 win over Manchester United in August.

Reguilon back at Spurs

Manchester United have reportedly triggered a break clause in Sergio Reguilon's loan move, allowing the defender to return to Tottenham.

United signed Reguilon late in the summer transfer window following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

With the left-back pair set to return to action this month, the Red Devils have let the Spaniard, 27, return to their Premier League rivals.

Sergio Reguilon made 12 appearances for Manchester United

He made 12 appearances, most recently as a substitute against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Spurs are fifth in the Premier League, eight points ahead of United in seventh.

All eyes are on Old Trafford as they oversee their first transfer window since Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake in the club last month.

Eddie staying steady

Eddie Howe's Newcastle have lost five of their last six Premier League games

Eddie Howe admits Newcastle are currently struggling for confidence but stressed the need not to "overdramatise" the situation after losing at Liverpool last night.

The Magpies are enduring a dismal run of form that has seen them lose five of their last six Premier League games and exit both the Champions League and Carabao Cup.

Their 4-2 reverse at Anfield saw them drop to ninth but Howe insists his team are putting all their focus into Saturday's Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland in the FA Cup third round.

He said: "The players are human beings. Naturally, we are not at our most confident levels currently.

"I think we have to do everything we can to protect that confidence because it's such an important thing whenever you play.

"That's why I have said before we need to be, not overreactive, not overdramatise things currently.

"We have a huge game to come in the next few days and I think all of our energy and resources need to go into that."

No Partey

Thomas Partey will play no part in Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations campaign

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been left out of Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations squad due to injury.

Partey, 30, has been out of action since October with a hamstring issue and will play no part in the Black Stars' campaign in the Ivory Coast.

Manager Chris Hughton said: "This is the biggest injury that he has had.

"The most important thing for me as head coach and our association is to give him the support that he needs through this period of time.

"Withstanding his injury, he certainly would be in the squad."

Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey also misses out but Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo are among the Premier League names included.

Cairney signs

Tom Cairney has committed his future to Fulham

Fulham captain Tom Cairney has signed a new contract to stay at Craven Cottage until the summer of 2025.

Cairney, 32, has racked up 304 appearances since joining from Blackburn in 2015 and his new deal will take his stay with the West Londoners to 10 years.

He told the club website: "It means everything to me to extend my contract. 10 years is a hell of a long time in football, a very rare thing.

"I said from quite early on that Fulham feels like home — a lot of players say that and then move on but I feel like it's obvious that I meant it as I'll still be here 10 years later.

"I just want to thank everyone for the support over the years — the Fulham fans have been incredible with me and I'll just look to keep repaying them."

Fulham owner Tony Khan added: "I don't think the importance of Tom Cairney joining Fulham in 2015 can be underestimated in terms of our recent history.

"He has been a great signing for the club whose contribution over the years has led to so many memorable successes on the pitch."

Hollywood calling

Steven Fletcher scored a hat-trick in Wrexham's win over Barrow on New Year's Day

Steven Fletcher has revealed how a call from an unknown Los Angeles number persuaded him to sign for Wrexham.

The ex-Scotland striker, 36, joined the Red Dragons on a free transfer in September and scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Barrow on New Year's Day.

After the victory, Fletcher explained how the club's Hollywood owners convinced him to complete the move to the Racecourse Ground.

He said: "Obviously when Ryan called me it did help, I'm not going to lie.

"It's Ryan Reynolds, how could you say no?

"I had the conversation, it was quite short to be honest with you. It was just 'we'd love to have you here and be a part of the club'.

"I had already made up my mind to be honest but it did give me a little confidence boost to say 'yeah, go on then'."

Etherington departs

Matthew Etherington lasted only 11 games as Colchester's permanent boss

Colchester have sacked manager Matthew Etherington after their 1-0 defeat to Gillingham left them 22nd in League Two.

Etherington, 42, was appointed in November following a spell as caretaker but has been dismissed after an eighth defeat in nine games which leaves the Essex outfit five points above the relegation zone.

The club said in a brief statement: "Following this afternoon's defeat against Gillingham, Colchester have relieved Matty Etherington of his duties as head coach.

"The club would like to thank Matty for his time in charge of the first team."
