The Champions League is fast becoming the be-all and end-all this season for Bayern Munich, who are now 10 points adrift of Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen after the weekend fixtures.

But the Bavarians have it all to do in the second leg of their last-16 tie with Lazio after a 1-0 defeat in Rome last month.

Team news

Dayot Upamecano was sent off for Bayern in the first leg, so he is suspended for Tuesday's tie. The France international is likely to be replaced by Matthijs de Ligt, who missed Friday's 2-2 Bundesliga draw against Bochum due to suspension.

Sacha Boey, Noussair Mazraou, Bouna Sarr, Tarek Buchmann, Noel Aseko-Nkili and Kingsley Coman are all injured for the hosts, who also have concerns over wingers Leroy Sane and Serge Gnabry.

Nicolo Rovella and Patric are Lazio's only confirmed absentees for the trip to the Allianz Arena.

The stats

Maurizio Sarri's Lazio have lost three of their four matches since beating Bayern Munich in the first leg

Bayern Munich have won just one of their last five matches, losing three times in that run which includes a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League tie.

They have won 12 of their 16 home outings this season, however, and 20 of their last 25 European outings at the Allianz Arena, with only Liverpool (2019) and Paris Saint-Germain (2021) beating them on home soil in that time.

Publicidad

Lazio have lost three of their four matches since winning the first leg at the Stadio Olimpico.

And the Italians conceded six goals in three away games in the group stage.

Prediction

Bayern Munich's faltering domestic form has placed increased emphasis on their Champions League ambitions.

The Germans are overwhelming favourites to beat Lazio in the second leg of their last-16 tie, but they will need to play much better than they have in recent weeks.

Bayern were especially lacklustre in a 1-0 first-leg defeat in Rome, although they have failed to score in just one of their last 27 Champions League ties at home, a 0-0 draw against Copenhagen in their final group game of this season.

Lazio kept Bayern quiet at the Stadio Olimpico last month, but they struggled defensively on their group-stage travels and may fail to stifle a Bayern side with something to prove for a second time.

But the hosts may not run riot given their recent stuttering performances, and backing Bayern to win a game featuring no more than three goals, something which has happened in six of their last nine home victories, looks the best approach.
