Aston Villa and Leicester are still waiting for their first Women’s Super League win after a goalless draw at Villa Park.

Leicester, whose only shot on target was a weak effort six minutes from time, were hanging on at the end and needed a close-range save from Janina Leitzig to deny Anna Patten in added time to secure a point.

The home side piled on the pressure in the closing stages but could not take advantage of their dominance in a game which only really came to life in the final half-hour.

Early in the second half, Sophie Howard squandered Leicester’s best chance when she headed Courtney Nevin’s deep cross into the side-netting, one of only 11 touches the visitors had in their opponents’ penalty area.

Statistics like that highlight whey they have scored only one goal in four league matches and Villa should really have made more of the chances they had.

Substitute Adriana Leon weaved her way in from the left to force Leitzig to tip over her shot from a narrow angle but their two best chances fell to defender Patten.

The centre-back failed to get a good enough connection on Kenza Dali’s inswinging cross in the 76th minute and could have snatched the victory deep into added on time only to be denied by a good save from Leitzig.

In between those chances, Emilia Pelgander was credited with Leicester’s only effort on target but in reality her attempt was more of a mis-control than a shot, diverting a cross goalwards with a heavy touch.

But, after withstanding some late pressure, Leicester were happy to leave with a point, only their second in seven meetings against Villa.
