Burnley battled to a valuable point at Aston Villa that lifts them above the relegation zone on goal difference going into the final day.

Ashley Barnes broke the deadlock from the spot on the stroke of half-time after Emiliano Buendia tripped Maxwel Cornet in the box.

Buendia made amends for his first-half error soon after the restart by volleying past a despairing Nick Pope.

Neither side were able to find a winner but Burnley were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time as Matthew Lowton was sent off following a late challenge on Calum Chambers.

Despite seeing the value of the draw, Burnley boss Mike Jackson insisted their job was not done yet.

He said: "It's not mission accomplished. The least we wanted was a point. We're a little disappointed not to get the three.

"Everything I've seen tonight is what this group does. They've had to dig in, they've had to work. We'll need it again on Sunday.

"Nick Pope is getting better and better. I can't say enough about him. He's playing out of his skin. He's been unbelievable for us, not just as a player but also as a person and a character around the place."

Villa manager Steven Gerrard also hailed Pope's goalkeeping heroics following the game.

He said: "Honours are even because of Nick Pope. He was outstanding. He's helped his team get a point.

"We gave ourselves a big problem conceding the penalty. Outside of that, we've done everything to win the game. We just lacked the quality in the final third.

"The issue for me is we need to solve a bigger problem. We're creating chances but not scoring enough goals. I want to challenge my players to find better quality.

"We created enough opportunities to score more. We can't just say it was because the keeper played well. I'd like more quality in the final third."

Aston Villa dominated the game but Nick Pope's goalkeeping heroics earned Burnley a point

Did you know?

Villa have ended their season at Villa Park with just one win from their final six games (D2 L3), averaging a lower points-per-game tally under Gerrard at home (1.14) than under Dean Smith (1.4) in 2021-22.

Pope made eight saves, the joint-most he's recorded in a single Premier League game.

Buendia is the second Villan player this season to score and concede a penalty in a top-flight game after Kourtney Hause (against Manchester United) in September.

The Argentine has scored in back-to-back Premier League starts for the very first time, with both goals coming against the Clarets.

Barnes has found the net with each of his seven Premier League penalties for Burnley — the most of any player for the club in the division, surpassing Graham Alexander's tally of six.

Lowton is the fifth different former Villa player to be sent off against the Villans after appearing for them in the Premier League, with all five red cards coming at Villa Park. He is the first since Christian Benteke in July 2020.
