World Cup 2023: All you need to know about Brazil

Brazil have been ever-present at the Women's World Cup but lifting the trophy is a prize that has eluded them. 

The closest the Selecao came to doing so was when they were beaten by Germany at the final hurdle in 2007.

However, they have been South America's dominant force in recent years — winning eight of the last nine Copa America tournaments. 

That dominance has yet to translate to the global stage but Brazil will hope to pull off a historic win in Australia and New Zealand.

How Brazil qualified for Australia and New Zealand 2023

Brazil earned their spot at the World Cup through their performance in the 2022 Copa America, with qualification guaranteed to the teams that reach the final.

The Selecao eased their way into the showpiece, beating Paraguay 2-0 to set up a clash with Colombia. 

They maintained their dominance over their continent with a 1-0 victory — Debinha's 39th-minute penalty proved the difference between the two sides.

Star player: Geyse

Geyse is set to be Brazil's shining light in Australia and New Zealand. 

After scoring 20 goals for Real Madrid in Liga F, she made the controversial switch to Barcelona last summer. 

The forward, 25, has been rewarded for her bravery, playing a significant part in Blaugrana's historic double as they won the Spanish title and the Champions League.

One to watch: Kerolin

Kerolin enjoyed a strong start to the season at club level with NWSL side North Carolina Courage, scoring eight goals in her first 13 games.

The 23-year-old is another versatile player, able to play through the middle, on the wing or even in midfield, providing plenty of fluidity as she interchanges with her team-mates.

The boss: Pia Sundhage

Pia Sundhage has been head coach of Brazil since July 2019. 

Before that appointment, she spent five years in charge of Sweden and the USA — the 63-year-old picked up two Olympic medals and a runners-up spot in the 2011 World Cup with the latter.
