The teams

England: The Lionesses will be looking to make the most of their home advantage and top a group packed full of familiar opponents.

Sarina Wiegman's outfit will fancy their chances, having avoided any side above them in the FIFA World Rankings.

England are currently eighth after beating both Austria and Northern Ireland home and away in recent World Cup qualifying matches.

Norway: England's biggest test is likely to come from Norway, who possess one of the world's best wingers in Caroline Graham Hansen.

The 27-year-old Barcelona forward is averaging almost a goal every other game for her country and — along with iconic striker Ada Hegerberg — will be crucial to the Grasshoppers' fortunes.

Austria: Irene Fuhrmann's unit have a star of their own in Hoffenheim's Nicole Billa, who continues to score international goals at an impressive rate — including one against Group A opponents Northern Ireland in April.

The Austrians ran England close in a 1-0 defeat last November and will need to be similarly well organised this summer if they are to make it through to the quarter-finals.

Northern Ireland: Ranked just 46th in the world, the Green and White Army are Group A's underdogs but they will be out to cause a shock when Euro 2022 kicks off.

That will be a tough task against an England side who racked up nine goals without reply in the teams' last two meetings, though they will be buoyed by a commendable 2-2 draw with Austria on home soil last October.

Venues

England will be roared on by a partisan home crowd at a sold-out Old Trafford when they face Austria in their opening match.

And the Lionesses will be similarly well-supported against Norway and Northern Ireland at the Amex Stadium and St Mary's respectively.

Northern Ireland's fixtures against Norway and Austria will both take place in Southampton, while Brighton is the setting for Austria vs Norway on the final matchday.

Pre-tournament form guide

Wiegman's England go into Euro 2022 in impressive form and are on an 11-match unbeaten run in competitive fixtures.

That streak included double-figure hauls against minnows North Macedonia, Latvia (twice) and Luxembourg, though they did only draw with heavyweights Canada and Spain at the Arnold Clark Cup.

Norway suffered surprise defeats to Portugal and Italy during February's Algarve Cup but bounced back with victories in their last two World Cup qualifiers against Kosovo and Poland.

Despite losing 2-1 to Denmark in June, Austria had won five games on the bounce before that result, while Northern Ireland will be looking to get back on track after consecutive World Cup qualifying defeats.

Key game

Top spot is likely to rest on the result of England's clash with Norway.

These teams have not met since a friendly encounter in 2019 when Martin Sjogren's side ran out 2-1 winners thanks to goals from Frida Maanum and Hansen.

But the Lionesses have had the edge at major tournaments — beating Norway 2-1 at the 2015 World Cup and 3-0 at the 2019 edition.

The hosts will be hoping for more of the same this time around.

LiveScore verdict

England will expect to top Group A and should achieve that aim, with Norway likely to finish as runners-up.

Northern Ireland's chances of success appear to be slim but do not rule out Austria pulling off a shock and edging ahead of the Grasshoppers into second place.
