It is time for another whistle-stop tour across Europe’s top leagues for this weekend’s predictions, with picks from France, Germany, Italy and Spain to get your teeth into.

We begin our tour in Berlin for the first of our five selections, which we have included in an accumulator that returns at 37/1.

Saturday, 2.30pm

Union Berlin should be highly motivated for Saturday’s visit of Mainz knowing that a win would take them top of the table with current leaders Bayern Munich not in action until Sunday.

A run of three straight wins for Union, coupled with Bayern’s run of draws, has seen the Berliners close to within a point of the reigning champions and they will be counting on their ultra-reliable home form to keep up the pressure in this unlikely title race.

Union have not lost at home in the league in nearly a year, winning 10 of their 14 assignments in that time and welcome a Mainz side that has struggled when visiting top-half opposition this term.

Saturday, 7.45pm

Sassuolo ran riot in Milan last weekend as they thumped the reigning Serie A champions 5-2, but that was their first win since October and they are worth opposing when hosting away-day specialists Atalanta.

Only league leaders Napoli have picked up more points on their travels than La Dea and they have been in good form since the season resumed, winning three of their five league outings.

Atalanta’s decision to ditch the conservative approach they began the season and return to their old swashbuckling ways has proved a wise one with Gian Piero Gasperini’s men hitting 17 goals across their last five games. That level of firepower could overwhelm a Sassuolo side without a clean sheet in 12 Serie A games.

Saturday, 8pm

Real Betis have gone four games without a victory at home in LaLiga but could get back on the winning trail against Celta Vigo.

No side has scored fewer away goals in Spain’s top flight than Celta Vigo, who do not tend to enjoy their trips to the Estadio Benito Villamarin, losing on three of their last five visits.

Betis’ winless run at home has coincided with visits from the likes of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona and Manuel Pellegrini’s side have been playing well enough of late to think that a home win is coming.

Saturday, 8pm

Bruno Genesio's Rennes can make home advantage count against Lille
Bruno Genesio's Rennes can make home advantage count against Lille

These two sides are fighting hard for Champions League qualification with Rennes currently five points clear of Lille and looking good value to extend that advantage given their excellent home form.

Rennes have won 10 of their 11 Ligue 1 games at Roazhon Park this season and are catching Lille at a good time with the goals drying up for the Mastiffs in the absence of star striker Jonathan David.

Lille’s away form is nothing to write home about, and they have tended to come up short when going to their fellow top-half teams, so this looks like a tough day out for Paulo Fonseca’s men.

Rennes recently turned over Paris Saint-Germain at home and their tendency to get off to a fast start on their own patch could make all the difference against Lille.

Monday, 5.30pm

Lazio are in the thick of the race for Champions League qualification and have a great chance to strengthen their position when they travel to Verona.

Verona’s form has slightly improved since the World Cup break ended with back-to-back wins moving them five points from safety.

But, this is still a side that has lost the second-highest number of league games this season and has been bested in four of the last five home meetings with Lazio.

The Eagles have the best defensive away record in Serie A, conceding just six goals in nine games, and have won at far trickier place this season than Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi.
