USA vs Uruguay predictions: Hosts facing early Copa exit
- Uruguay have won three games on the spin, scoring 12 goals and conceding just one
- USA have only won two of their last eight matches in regulation time
- Recommended bet: Uruguay to win
The pressure is mounting on Copa America hosts the USA as they prepare to face Uruguay in their final Group C match at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
After losing to Panama last time out, Gregg Berhalter's side know they realistically may have to beat the group leaders if they are to progress to the knockout stages.
That may be easier said than done, with Uruguay having won both their matches at this year's Copa, running it eight goals in the process, while they still need a point to absolutely confirm their own spot in the quarter-finals.
Team news
It was a night to forget for the USA against Panama, as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat in Atlanta, with their cause not being helped by the sending-off of forward Timothy Weah during the first half.
Weah will now miss the clash with Uruguay due to suspension, while there are doubts surrounding the fitness of goalkeeper Matt Turner, who was forced off at half-time against Panama with an apparent leg injury.
Ethan Horvath should deputise if the Nottingham Forest keeper fails to prove his fitness.
Uruguay are all but through to the knockout stages and head coach Marcelo Bielsa could be tempted into making changes to his line-up, with Luis Suarez, Rodrigo Bentancur and Jose Maria Gimenez among the players pushing for their first starts of the competition.
The stats
The USA have only won two of their last eight matches inside regulation time.
Uruguay are on a three-match winning streak, scoring 12 goals and conceding just once during that sequence, while they have also avoided defeat in each of their last six competitive internationals.
La Celeste forward Darwin Nunez has scored a staggering 10 goals across his last seven international appearances.
Uruguay have failed to win any of their last four meetings with the USA (D3, L1), but they did triumph in the only previous Copa America clash between the two sides, a 1-0 group-stage success in 1993.
Prediction
Uruguay have arguably been the most impressive side at this year's Copa, following up an opening 3-1 victory over Panama with a 5-0 thrashing of Bolivia last time out.
While those results have all but sealed their place in the knockout stages already, the fact they are not completely guaranteed should ensure there is no letting up against an unpredictable USA side.
The Stars and Stripes were far from at their best against Panama and having warmed up for this tournament with a 5-1 defeat to Colombia, it is hard to see Berhalter's team getting the result they need against Uruguay.
With Bielsa demanding the 15-time Copa America winners keep their standards high, there appears to be plenty of value in siding with a Uruguay win.
