Scotland clinched promotion with a goalless draw against Ukraine in their final Nations League group game of the 2022-23 campaign.

The Scots needed to avoid defeat against their hosts, who were two points behind them going into the game, in order to keep hold of top spot.

It was a battling performance from Steve Clarke's men in what proved to be a tight contest as the Ukrainians forced veteran goalkeeper Craig Gordon into a number of important saves, particularly in the second half.

Centre-back pairing Ryan Porteous and Jack Hendry both produced imperious displays as Scotland survived the pressure to cling on for the point that takes them into the top tier of the competition.

Boss Clarke expressed his delight with the performances of his players after the full-time whistle.

He said: "Ukraine are a very good team, we knew they'd have moments in the game and ask Craig [Gordon] to make saves — he did that as he always does.

"Porteous was outstanding for a debut. So pleased for the boy, shows that he listens and that he learns.

"I'm also so pleased for Jack Hendry — big ask for Jack. Everyone expects Callum McGregor and John McGinn to play three games with that intensity but I had to ask Jack to do that again — he was struggling a bit with a cold but he was outstanding in all three games.

"In terms of moving on from summer camps, I sat down with the whole staff and said we have to set a different environment, demand more of the players.

"Then I sat down with the players and gave them a lot of information to change the system and play a slightly different way.

"These players are desperate to do well for their country and they have had a great week."
