Five of the most underrated Premier League signings this summer

During a summer of high-profile signings, a few impressive ones have slipped under the radar.

We take a look at the Premier League additions that have not yet received the headlines they deserve.

Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth)

Paolo Maldini was so impressed by Milos Kerkez that he made a personal phone call to convince him to sign for AC Milan in January 2021.

And one of the greatest defenders in history must regret that the Rossoneri let Kerkez go, as 18 months later he is playing regular Premier League football at the age of 19.

Bournemouth's summer arrival scored five goals and assisted seven for AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie last season and has made an impressive start on the South Coast.

Arnaut Danjuma (Everton)

It has gone under the radar that Everton finally captured a player they had all but signed in January before he left them hanging and went to Tottenham.

Danjuma scored 16 goals and assisted four more in the 2021-22 season for Villarreal, with only six players scoring more in the Champions League that term.

And he has made a lively start for the Toffees too, taking nine shots in 160 minutes of Premier League action and netting the winner in Wednesday's 2-1 Carabao Cup victory at Doncaster.

Mateo Kovacic (Manchester City)

Signing Mateo Kovacic has enabled an easy transition into life without Ilkay Gundogan for Manchester City.

The summer recruit from Chelsea has struck up an impressive rapport with Rodri, who has scored twice already this season.

On the new midfield partnership, the Spanish maestro said: "Ilkay [Gundogan] and Kevin [De Bruyne] played much higher than me so I needed to cover them but now with Mateo I can go forward more. 

"He's a very experienced player and a smart player."

Lewis Hall (Newcastle)

Lewis Hall to Newcastle makes perfect sense for both the player and the club.

Hall is a boyhood Geordie, who joins the team he supports ahead of a Champions League campaign and with the promise of plenty of success over the next few years.

For Eddie Howe, he now has a young left-back with the potential to cover — and eventually replace — current incumbent Dan Burn, just as Tino Livramento will do for Kieran Trippier on the right.

Vinicius Souza (Sheffield United)

Sheffield United have been written off as relegation fodder but have actually added some decent quality in midfield.

One of their new recruits is Vinicius Souza, who has made an impressive start to life at Bramall Lane after standing out on loan at Espanyol from Lommel last term.

The Brazilian already ranks seventh for tackles among positional rivals in the Premier League, excelled against Manchester City last Sunday and seems to complement fellow addition Gustavo Hamer nicely in the middle of the park for Paul Heckingbottom's side.
