Transfer Talk: McTominay has Scott to leave United to get regular minutes

Scott McTominay finds himself in a difficult position at Manchester United this summer.

The Scotland international made 24 appearances in the Premier League last season but with head coach Erik ten Hag looking to strengthen his midfield, he may find himself with fewer minutes in the 2023-24 campaign.

Reports suggest that the Dutchman would be open to selling the 26-year-old for a reasonable fee with West Ham, Newcastle and Everton all interested.

We take a look at the options available to the Red Devils' No39.

Summer switch

Ten Hag was pushing hard to bring Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong to Old Trafford last summer and there is reason to believe that he may try to add more firepower to the midfield once again.

The addition of Mason Mount may not directly threaten McTominay's place in the team but with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes all higher up in the pecking order, chances of regular action in Manchester look pretty slim.

And the opportunity to take his talents elsewhere looks to be on the table, with West Ham the frontrunners to land the 39-cap international.

David Moyes can offer European football and a place in the starting XI after Declan Rice departed for London rivals Arsenal.

It would also allow McTominay the opportunity to play in London for a side that looks to be on the up after a poor Premier League campaign.

Alternative options

Should the defensive anchor prefer to stay in the North of England, then he may consider offers from either Newcastle or Everton.

The Magpies would present an exciting project compared to Everton, who survived relegation by the skin of their teeth.

Eddie Howe has done a phenomenal job on Tyneside, securing Champions League football for the first time since 2002 and could look to McTominay to stabilise his midfield.

That said, the recruitment of Sandro Tonali may hinder his chances of becoming a regular starter.

But at Everton, the 6ft 2in powerhouse would be the star of the show and could lead the Toffees' resurgence as they prepare to move into their new 52,000-seater stadium.

Be selfish

Former Manchester United and Scotland midfielder Gordon Strachan has urged his compatriot to consider his future at Old Trafford and do what is best for him.

Strachan, who played 160 times for the Red Devils, said: "If he isn't going to be starting, then perhaps he should think about joining a club where he will play every week.

"But, it's a scary thing leaving Manchester United. He's at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"Is he going to be happy being a squad player for United, or does he want to fulfil that undoubted potential that he has and go and play every week for another team?"

Stay and fight

Of course, McTominay could choose to remain at the Premier League giants, even if it means sitting on the bench for the foreseeable future.

Ten Hag is reportedly eyeing a £30million fee for the academy graduate, but will not force him out of the club against his wishes.

Scotland's determined talisman had his moments in a red shirt last season and he may yet defy the odds and turn his United future around.
