Newcastle have opened negotiations with Chelsea to sign German forward Timo Werner on a season-long loan.

Werner, 26, has struggled to make an impact for the Blues since sealing a switch to West London from RB Leipzig in July 2020.

The 53-cap international has struck 23 times in 89 appearances for Thomas Tuchel’s outfit but has struggled for consistency in front of goal.

According to the Mirror, the Magpies are eager to add attacking reinforcements to St James’ Park having missed out on French hotshot Hugo Ekitike who instead decided to join Paris-Saint Germain.

Werner could be a good fit for the upwardly-mobile Tynesiders, but an agreement may come down to the amount of the striker's £270,000-a-week wages they are willing to pay.

They may also face competition from Leipzig, who are thought to be interested in bringing their former star back to the Bundesliga.

Reports in the Daily Mail claim Kepa Arrizabalaga could also be set for a temporary exit from Stamford Bridge.

Napoli are eager to bring the Spanish stopper to Serie A on loan, with the 27-year-old also keen to secure regular game time ahead of the World Cup.

An expected addition to Tuchel’s squad is fellow keeper Gabriel Slonina.

The Athletic believe the Chicago Fire teenager will cost Chelsea around £8million and will join up with his new team-mates at the end of the MLS season.
