Substitute George Lapslie scores late winner for Gillingham at Morecambe
A late goal from substitute George Lapslie gave Gillingham a 1-0 victory over Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium.
Lapslie volleyed home Shadrach Ogie’s left-wing cross from two yards out to earn Mark Bonner’s side their second successive win of the new League Two season as Morecambe fell to a second defeat.
The Gills were second best for most of the first half with Morecambe having the upper hand in terms of chances.
Ben Tollitt was the first to test Jake Turner when he brushed off two challenges on the edge of the box to drill in a shot that the visiting keeper parried over the bar.
Turner had to react sharply again to save from Jamie Stott’s close-range effort though he could only stand and watch when Gwion Edwards’ late strike fizzed inches wide of the left-hand post.
Chances were at a premium in the second period before the goal, which came after Ogie had seen a shot saved by Stuart Moore at his near post and the ball recycled for Lapslie to produce the vital goal.
Oliver Hawkins hit the crossbar with a late header for the visitors as the Shrimps pushed bodies forward looking for a leveller.
