A miserable season comes to a close for relegated Rotherham on Saturday as they host mid-table Cardiff at the New York Stadium.

The Millers’ fate has been sealed for some time and they know they will be playing their football in the third tier next season.

Cardiff know they can finish no lower than the 12th spot they currently occupyand they could potentially finish as high as ninth with a victory in South Yorkshire.

Team news

Returning Rotherham boss Steve Evans has a few injury issues to contend with as Sean Morrison, Peter Kioso, Tyler Blackett, Christ Tiehi, Cafu and Andre Green are all missing for the visit of Cardiff.

The Bluebirds have injury worries across the pitch as keeper Jak Alnwick, defenders Mark McGuinness, Jamilu Collins, Perry Ng and Josh Wilson-Esbrand, playmaker Aaron Ramsey and forwards Callum O'Dowda, Yakou Meite, Karlan Grant and Kion Etete are all unavailable.

The stats

Rotherham have suffered 29 defeats in 45 Championship games and have conceded a league-high 87 goals.

Cardiff have won three of their last five away games, while the Bluebirds have won each of the last three meetings between these two sides.

Prediction

Rotherham may be able to look towards next season with a sense of optimism after Evans returned to the hot-seat, but they will be glad to see the back of this campaign.

Evans did manage to claim a point in a goalless stalemate with Birmingham in his first game back in charge, but the Millers then followed that up with a 2-0 defeat at Bristol City, meaning that they have now gone five games without even scoring a goal.

In contrast, visitors Cardiff will see this season as a positive one as they are set for a mid-table finish after a few years of relegation battles.

The Bluebirds went down 4-1 at home to Middlesbrough last time out, but their road displays have been better than their home performances of late and they can finish off the campaign with a victory over the division’s bottom club.

Cardiff have won three of their last five away from home and look well placed to leave with all three points here.

The goals have dried up for Rotherham, while the visitors have been in good scoring form, having managed to find the back of the net in each of their last six games, so their stronger form in attack could prove the difference in this end-of-season fixture.
