In Focus: Sterling holding value despite England snub
Raheem Sterling has a point to prove to Gareth Southgate.
The Chelsea winger, 28, was left out of the England manager's latest squad, despite turning in some impressive performances recently.
He caught the eye in his side's 4-1 win at Tottenham and put in an excellent display in last Sunday's 4-4 draw with Manchester City.
Amid growing calls for a return to the England fold, we take a closer look at Sterling's form as the Three Lions prepare to host Malta on Friday night.
Sterling work
Sterling's season began relatively slowly but it soon became clear he would shine under Mauricio Pochettino.
A brace against Luton in August did not prove to be the catalyst for a return to his best, nor did a starring performance in a 4-1 win at Burnley last month.
Instead, key matches against London rivals Tottenham and champions City appear to have ignited a spark in Sterling.
He was a constant threat against the former, repeatedly breaking in behind Spurs' high defensive line and providing the crucial assist for Nicolas Jackson's first goal.
Chelsea's No7 also had a strike ruled out in that game but was not to be denied against City, converting Reece James' low cross in the first half.
Sunday's dazzling display came after the England squad had been announced but Sterling will still have his sights set on Euro 2024.
Making a case
There is no doubt Southgate will have taken notice of Sterling's last two performances, despite England's wealth of options in attack.
He is one of the most experienced players available for the national team and his ability to influence important games is clear.
Some might suggest a return of four Premier League goals so far this season is underwhelming — but Sterling is visibly playing with more freedom and confidence since Pochettino's arrival.
He ranks first in the division for attempted take-ons (67) having been given licence to run at defenders, which he did to great effect against both Spurs and City.
Sterling has also demonstrated his ability to press from the front, ranking joint third in the top flight for possessions won in the attacking third (14).
That was on show against City as he repeatedly harried defenders and proved his worth as a team player.
Patience is a virtue
There will be no panic from Sterling as next summer's Euros in Germany edge closer.
If he consistently reaches the level of his last two performances, he can expect to add to his 82 England caps.
Speaking last week, Southgate said: "The door is 100% open not only for Raheem but for other players who aren't in this squad, there's no doubt about that.
"He's a crucial part of why we've had the journey we've had over the last few years.
"I can only repeat what I said in the last few squad selection meetings. This squad is playing well, we had an exceptional win against Italy, so who do we leave out? It's as simple as that."
With so much talent available, Sterling will not regain his place without a fight but he has the quality to force his way back into contention and give Southgate a welcome selection headache.
