Rachel Daly scored the winning goal and was thrilled with Aston Villa's performance in their 1-0 victory over Leicester in the Women's Super League.

In the 16th minute, Daly’s first-time shot from an Adriana Leon cross was blocked but she followed up to fire the rebound into the back of the net.

The Lionesses striker claimed her side showed character throughout the game as she reacted to her decisive strike on social media.

After watching her goal back, she said "Oh! That was alright to be fair. I'll take that.

"Honestly though, what a performance from everyone.

"That's character tonight. We knew we had to come and turn the game around from the performance last week.

"From the blocks on the line, to the grit throughout the whole game.

"Obviously scoring the goal was nice but what a win."

Leicester came very close to scoring a late equaliser when substitute Deanne Rose's shot was saved and Ava Baker's strike on the rebound was cleared heroically off the line by Sarah Mayling.

But Villa held on for their fourth WSL win this season and have jumped up to seventh in the table.

Carla Ward's side had a tough start to the season losing their first five matches but have turned their fortunes around and have now won four of their past six outings in the WSL.

However, they did crash out of the FA Cup at the hands of Everton last week.

Villa are back in cup action again next as they head to Sunderland in the Women's League Cup.
