Premier League Matchday 24: Toon host Reds and relegation foes face off

Newcastle host Liverpool and Everton face relegation rivals Leeds during an action-packed Saturday on Matchday 24 of the Premier League.

Arsenal will look to put things right at Aston Villa as new leaders Manchester City visit Nottingham Forest, while London rivals Tottenham and West Ham go head-to-head on Sunday.

Aston Villa vs Arsenal (Saturday, 12.30pm, BT Sport)

After their midweek defeat to City saw them lose top spot, Arsenal look to get their title tilt back on track when they visit the West Midlands.

The Gunners have dropped seven points in their last three Premier League matches as they come up against former boss Unai Emery.

Emery's promising start with the Villans has stuttered slightly with two consecutive defeats — as many as they had in their previous nine under the Spaniard.

Fast starts have been a regular occurrence at Villa Park this season, with the Midlands outfit scoring (31%) and conceding (26%) a league-high share of their goals in the first 15 minutes of home games.

Brentford vs Crystal Palace (Saturday, 3pm)

Brentford can extend their remarkable unbeaten run in the Premier League to 10 matches against London neighbours Crystal Palace.

Only Newcastle (17) are currently enjoying a longer run without defeat in the top flight, while the Bees have also tasted success in their last three home games.

Patrick Vieira’s Eagles are still waiting for their first win of 2023, with three draws and three losses keeping them among the sides looking over their shoulder in the bottom half.

Ivan Toney has been directly involved in seven goals in as many Premier League games (six goals, one assist), accounting for 58% of Brentford’s strikes in these matches.

Brighton vs Fulham (Saturday, 3pm)

Brighton and Fulham are extraordinarily only six points off a top-four spot as two of the Premier League’s European contenders go head-to-head at the Amex.

The Seagulls have gone from strength to strength under Roberto de Zerbi and are yet to taste defeat in 2023 (three wins, two draws), last enjoying a longer unbeaten run at the start of the year in 2012.

Fulham’s rise since their promotion has perhaps been the bigger surprise, with their record of 10 wins this term bettered only by Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham.

After netting in the Cottagers’ 2-1 win earlier this season, Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored four times against the Seagulls in Premier League — more than he has against any other side in the competition.

Chelsea vs Southampton (Saturday, 3pm)

Chelsea will hope a home clash against rock-bottom and managerless Southampton will see them end their four-game winless streak in all competitions.

The Saints were 2-1 winners in August’s reverse fixture, though, as they look to record consecutive league wins over the West Londoners for the first time since 1993.

Pressure remains on Graham Potter as his expensively assembled squad sit in 10th place with finding the net a particular recent issue — the Blues have not scored more than once in any of their last seven.

It is a boost then that Portsmouth-born Mason Mount has been directly involved in five goals in as many Premier League starts against Southampton (four goals, one assist).

Everton vs Leeds (Saturday, 3pm)

Matchday 24’s big relegation clash sees Everton host managerless Leeds with just a point separating the two strugglers either side of the drop zone.

After beating Arsenal in his first game in charge, Sean Dyche was reminded of the difficult task at hand with the Toffees as they were comfortably beaten 2-0 in Monday’s Merseyside derby.

The Goodison Park club are the lowest scorers in the top flight this season with just 16 goals. Only two players currently at the club have netted more than once for them this campaign (Demarai Gray, three, Dwight McNeil, two).

Caretaker Michael Skubala takes charge of his third game against an opponent the Yorkshire side have beaten only once in the last 10 Premier League meetings.

Nottingham Forest vs Manchester City (Saturday, 3pm)

Nottingham Forest welcome a Manchester City side on a high after returning to the summit in midweek.

City were 6-0 winners over the Reds earlier this season but face a much different beast this time around, with Steve Cooper’s men unbeaten in their last seven Premier League games at the City Ground.

This is the Citizens' first away Premier League contest kicking off at 3pm on a Saturday this season. They have won their previous 14 such games in the competition — last losing at Villa in 2013.

Kevin De Bruyne was on target against the Gunners in midweek and has been directly involved in 25 goals in 34 league appearances against promoted teams.

Wolves vs Bournemouth (Saturday, 3pm)

Wolves have earned a healthy cushion between themselves and the relegation zone as they host a Bournemouth side still in real danger of the drop.

Gary O’Neil’s men are winless in seven games, losing each of their last seven on road. The Cherries will hope a hard-earned draw with Newcastle at home last time out will be a much-needed turning point.

The Cherries have never beaten Saturday’s opponents in the Premier League in five previous attempts, while the men from Molineux have avoided defeat against the last seven promoted sides they have faced.

Newcastle vs Liverpool (Saturday, 5.30pm, Sky Sports)

A tasty encounter on Saturday evening sees top-four chasing Newcastle collide with Liverpool, who got back to winning ways earlier this week.

Eddie Howe’s men have undoubtedly enjoyed the better season overall but have seen their momentum halt of late after drawing five of their last six games.

The Reds are the only side to have beaten the Toon in the Premier League this season — 2-1 in August — while they are also without defeat in their last five trips to St James’ Park.

Mohamed Salah has six goals in his last 10 games against the Magpies and netted his 126th Premier League goal for the Merseysiders last time out. 

The Egyptian is just two goals away from equalling Robbie Fowler in becoming their highest scorer in the competition.

Manchester United vs Leicester (Sunday, 2pm, Sky Sports)

Manchester United welcome a confident Leicester side to Old Trafford after the Foxes boosted their survival hopes with comprehensive wins over Aston Villa and Tottenham in their last two.

The East Midlands outfit are looking to claim three straight Premier League wins for the first time in over two years.

Erik ten Hag’s men were 1-0 winners in the reverse fixture but have not beaten Leicester in their last two home league meetings.

Marcus Rashford has scored in each of his last six league games at the Theatre of Dreams, while ex-Man City striker Kelechi Iheanacho has five goal involvements in his last two outings (two goals, three assists).

Tottenham vs West Ham (Sunday, 4.30pm, Sky Sports)

A London derby awaits stand-in Tottenham boss Cristian Stellini as they face West Ham in the weekend’s final fixture.

Antonio Conte is absent from the sidelines once again as he recovers from gallbladder surgery with Spurs facing a fixture they have lost just twice in the last 10.

The Hammers remain only two points above the drop but are unbeaten in their last three league matches, with a win over Everton before consecutive draws against Newcastle and Chelsea.

No player has scored the opening goal (seven) or winner (eight) in more Premier League games than all-time leading Spurs scorer Harry Kane this season.
