Nigeria reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after Ademola Lookman scored twice in a 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the last 16.

The former Leicester forward opened the scoring nine minutes before the half-time break before sealing the victory in the 90th minute.

It was a disappointing display by Cameroon, who failed to register a shot on target despite the introduction of star striker Vincent Aboubakar for his first appearance of the tournament in the second half.

Three-time winners Nigeria will meet Angola in the last eight after the North African nation impressed in a 3-0 victory over Namibia earlier on Saturday.

Nigeria thought they had opened the scoring after just nine minutes when Semi Ajayi poked home, only for the goal to be rightly ruled out after a VAR check.

Indomitable Lions goalkeeper Oumar Ondoa twice failed to clear the danger in the build-up to the disallowed effort, with the Nimes stopper once again selected over Manchester United's Andre Onana.

Lookman's opener then squirmed under Ondoa in the 36th minute after some excellent work by striker Victor Osimhen.

Nottingham Forest ace Ola Aina missed a golden chance to double the Super Eagles' lead after being teed up by Lookman.

But the former England Under-21 star finally secured the win they deserved after volleying home from Fulham defender Calvin Bassey's assist.

The Super Eagles will fancy their chances of adding to their AFCON title haul after progressing through their group unbeaten while a number of other favourites faltered.

Cameroon boss Rigobert Song is now set to face pressure, with their early exit following a group-stage elimination at the 2022 World Cup.
