Newcastle -3 on handicap

Newcastle reached the FA Cup quarter-finals last season but that was their best performance since making the last four in 2004-05 and manager Eddie Howe may feel his side has the quality to go further this year.

The Magpies have been handed a golden opportunity to get off to a winning start in the competition with a home tie against League Two Bromley, who are playing in the EFL for the first time this season after winning the National League play-offs last year.

The Ravens are in the FA Cup third round for the first time, having had to begin the road to Wembley as early as the preliminary round in their non-league days.

Manager Andy Woodman was the goalkeeper coach at Newcastle from 2010 to 2015 but should not expect any favours from his old club given their thirst for silverware.

Bromley have made a solid start to establishing themselves in the EFL and are 12th in the table with 34 points from 24 matches. They beat non-league duo Rochdale 4-3 and Solihull Moors 2-1 to reach this stage, with both of those wins coming on the road.

Newcastle are up to fifth in the Premier League after winning their last five top-flight games, and they won the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final 2-0 at Arsenal on Tuesday with goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Team news

Eddie Howe is set to rest some of his star players, including striker Alexander Isak, who is dealing with a minor hamstring strain.

The Magpies boss said he will still pick "a strong enough squad" to win the game but Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles are still sidelined by injury.

Bromley have signed prolific striker Nicke Kabamba from non-league Barnet, but he is ineligible for this match after playing for the Bees in an earlier round.

The Ravens have also signed a permanent deal with midfielder Ben Thompson after he impressed in a loan spell from Stevenage. Centre-back Kamarl Grant is suspended after being sent off at Crewe last week.

Newcastle have won two of their last three home games by three or more goals.

Six of the wins in Newcastle's current seven-game winning streak came by at least two goals.

The Magpies have kept clean sheets in four of their last five games.

Bromley have scored in each of their last five matches.

Both teams have scored in three of Bromley's last four games.

Bromley have won five league away matches this season and only three at home.

Prediction

Newcastle may not need their superstars to ease to a wide-margin success against Bromley. They can still field some top-notch talent against the Ravens with Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock among those likely to feature.

Bromley may well have been distracted by this forthcoming fixture when they were heavily beaten at Crewe last Sunday, but the red card shown to loan defender Kamarl Grant also forces them into a defensive reshuffle.

Conceding four goals to a League Two team, albeit a strong one, does not bode well for a visit to a red-hot Premier League side and Newcastle can make their class count to chalk up a victory by at least four goals.
